About an hour and a half went by after Linda had the CT scan done and still no results. A nurse came in though and took some blood from Linda for testing. Cathy struggled to be patient while she watched the discomfort that her daughter is in.
“Mom, what is taking so long?” Linda cried.
Cathy held Linda’s hand and tried to comfort her. Just then, Dr. Green and Dr. John’s walked into the room. Dr. Johns held up the film from the CT scan so that Cathy could see it. Nothing was found on the scan, and the doctors have no idea why Linda is in so much pain. Dr. John’s handed Dr. Green the film and then took the otoscope out of her pocket. She looked into Linda’s left ear and saw some drainage of white fluid.
“Was this drainage here before?” Dr. John’s asked Dr. Green.
“No, I didn’t see anything,” he looked with surprise.
“Okay, maybe it’s just an infection of some kind that’s presenting itself now. Give her some antibiotics, and it should clear up in a couple of days,” Dr. John’s looked at Dr. Green.
Cathy asked about the pain that Linda was having and Dr. John’s told her that two Tylenol every six hours should help. So, Dr. Green wrote up a prescription for the antibiotics for Linda and also instructed Cathy to see their regular doctor if the problem persists. Cathy felt somewhat relieved that they didn’t find anything inside of Linda’s head. But she was concerned as to why all of a sudden she got this infection.
Dr. John’s left the room while Dr. Green finished up talking to Cathy. He reassured her that Linda should be fine in a couple of days and said that they can go home now. Cathy helped Linda to her feet, and they went out the ER doors to the parking lot. On their way to the drug store, Linda’s ear started to drain more fluid. Cathy handed Linda a couple of napkins to catch the fluid.
“The pain is easing up a little,” Linda said as she held the napkin to her ear.
“Oh, that’s good. See, you’ll be back to normal in no time,” Cathy pulled into Walgreens drive-thru.
Cathy handed the script in and was told that it will be ready later in the day. So the two of them headed for home. While Cathy was driving, Joann called her cell phone. Cathy pushed the button on her steering wheel and answered the phone.
“Hi aunt Cathy, I’ve been waiting for you to call,” Joann said.
“I’m sorry dear. We are on our way home now,” Cathy said.
“Oh, is Linda okay?”
“Yes, she will be. The doctor said that it’s just an infection.”
“Oh, okay. Well, I’ll see you soon then,” Joann said.
“Yes, we’ll be there in a few minutes,” Cathy ended the call.
The fluid coming out if Linda’s ear seemed to stop for now. And her headache eased up quite a bit too. When the two of them got home, Linda was feeling hungry and asked for pancakes and bacon. Cathy gladly accepted the request and made a breakfast feast for the three of them. Joann was happy to be home and able spend time with her aunt and cousin. It was like old times again when they were together, before the girls grew up and went off to college.
