Joann and her aunt Cathy spent the evening reminiscing about some of the silly times that they had when Joann and Linda were younger. Cathy reminded Joann that she even went through an alien-loving phase when she was ten years old. For Halloween Joann dressed up as a green alien. Joann forgot about that since the phase only lasted a year.
At the hospital, Linda stayed awake and watched the whole movie. She also finished the pudding cup that she saved from dinner. It was almost 10:30 pm when Linda turned the television off and thought about the vision that she had earlier. Was that vision real or was it something I made up in my head, she thought. What she saw didn’t make any sense to her at the moment. But she lay there and closed her eyes, hoping that she could fall asleep. The area of the hall where Linda’s room was, was very quiet so she was able to drift off to sleep fairly quickly.
Joann and her aunt went to bed around 11 pm and planned to get up around 8 am. Cathy is hoping that the doctor will decide to release Linda sometime during the day tomorrow so that she can come home. Joann lay in her bed staring at a small reflection of light on the wall. I wonder if Linda will ever completely remember everything about her abduction, she thought. Joann imagined what the inside of the spaceship looked like. She remembered that Linda said she saw green plants everywhere inside of it.
Out at the Salt Lake Preserve, two hikers, Steve and Becky ignored the closed signs and snuck in over the gate. With all the talk of alien spaceship sightings out there, they wanted to try and see it for themselves. As they made their way up the trail, it was fairly quiet except for the nighttime critter sounds. Steve insisted that they climb to the top of the shorter mountain so that they could get a good view of the preserve. Becky was hesitant about the climb but went along with the idea anyway.
It was around 12:30 am by the time Steve and Becky got to the top of the mountain. Becky was out of breath and ready to collapse while Steve hurried to look out over the edge. Steve could only see what his flashlight and the moon shined upon as he looked down the mountain. Becky called out to him and asked to set up the tent.
Steve walked over to Becky and unloaded the tent from his backpack, “Isn’t this great?”
Becky smiled at Steve and then looked up at the stars in the sky. Steve dug a small lantern out of his backpack and turned it on. While he set the tent up, Becky dug in her backpack for two bottles of water. She brought enough food and water for the night and the next day only. While Steve finished with the tent, Becky looked out into the sky above the preserve and saw a small moving light.
“Steve, look… What is that?”
Steve looked to where Becky was pointing and saw the light in the sky. They both stood there and watched as the light was getting larger the closer it got to them. Steve took his cell phone out of his pocket and started to record the light movement. Whatever the light was shining from moved slowly and they didn’t hear anything. No engine sounds whatsoever came from it.
“This is what we came here for Becky,” Steve held his phone up and watched it.
The closer the light got to them, the clearer they were able to see a shape. Even though it was dark outside, Steve could tell that the ship was huge but circular. While he was focused on recording, he didn’t notice how frightened Becky was. She ran into the tent to hide from what she saw. The massive spacecraft moved over top of the mountain and shined its bright light down. Still recording, Steve blindly looked up and felt his body lift up off the ground.
“Becky,” Steve called out.
Becky was too scared to leave the tent, but after a minute, she peeked out and saw her boyfriend being lifted up into the spaceship. By then it was too late as she rushed out calling his name.
“Steve… Wait!”
Becky stood there looking up as the bright light dimmed and the spaceship slowly moved away. Before she could fully comprehend what just happened, the ship disappeared up into the sky. She looked around calling Steve’s name but he didn’t answer. Stunned and trembling, Becky climbed into the tent and sat there. She didn’t know what to do. Should I wait and see if he comes back, she thought. Becky drank some water and then laid down inside the tent. She listened to the crickets chirping while she stared at the lit lantern. About an hour passed and Becky couldn’t stay awake any longer.
