It was 7 am and Becky opened up her eyes. She sat up quickly when she remembered where she was.
“Steve?” Becky called out.
Becky got out of the tent and looked up at the bright and clear sky. She didn’t see anything but a few puffy white clouds. Becky glanced down and saw Steve’s cell phone lying on the ground where she last saw him. She picked it up and found that the battery had died. Still confused about what had happened last night, Becky left the tent but grabbed her backpack. She carefully made her way back down the mountain and climbed into her car. I have to go to the police station, she thought.
It was around 9:15 now and Cathy and Joann were just finishing up a pancake breakfast at home. Cathy put a couple of leftover pancakes into a container to take with them to the hospital for Linda. And Joann loaded the dishwasher before the two of them left. Linda had just finished eating the scrambled eggs and bacon that the hospital service gave her. These aren’t bad but I can’t wait to eat Mom’s food again, Linda thought.
At the police station, deputy Rhonda Dean just arrived for her shift. She had already made plans with Peter to set up video cameras at the preserve later. Deputy Ryan told Rhonda that a confused woman came in and is waiting in the other room to talk to her. Deputy Dean walked into the room and saw Becky sitting alone and upset.
“Hi, I’m Deputy Rhonda Dean, how can I help you?”
Becky looked at Rhonda with tears in her eyes, “It’s Steve, my boyfriend. He was abducted last night at the preserve.”
“Abducted?”
“Yes, we wanted to see for ourselves if aliens were in there so we climbed over the gate. We climbed up the shortest mountain and saw the ship come over. I was scared and ran into the tent but Steve stood there and watched it. The next thing I knew, I heard Steve call my name so I peeked out but it was too late. The aliens were pulling him up inside of their spaceship,” Becky said.
Deputy Dean handed Becky a couple of tissues and told her that they are going to write up a report. She also told her that the police department is going to do everything they can to find Steve.
“Maybe the aliens will bring Steve back like they did that girl,” Becky wiped her tears from her cheeks.
“Yes, let us hope that they do,” Deputy Dean walked out to get some report papers from the file cabinet.
Back at the hospital, Linda was watching a show about tigers on the animal planet channel. Her mom and Joann just arrived and walked into her room.
“Guess what we brought you?” Joann looked at Linda.
Cathy handed the container of pancakes to Linda.
Linda peeked inside and smiled, “pancakes, thank you.
Cathy asked Linda how she was feeling and Linda said good except for one thing. Joann looked at Linda and asked her what was wrong. Linda told them that yesterday after they left, she saw something strange in the mirror in the bathroom. She said that when she looked into the mirror, it was like a quick picture appeared and then disappeared.
“Well, what was it a picture of?” Joann asked.
“It was a young man and he looked distressed. The nurse was out here asking me if I was alright, but I didn’t know what to think so I didn’t tell her,” Linda said.
“Well, we won’t say anything about it unless something like that happens again,” Cathy kissed Linda on the forehead.
“Okay… I felt bad for the guy though because he looked so sad,” Linda said.
“That’s understandable dear, you are a very compassionate person,” Cathy said.
“What did the man look like?” Joann asked.
“I know that he had dark skin and short black hair, but it happened so quickly,” Linda said.
That left Joan wondering, so she sat down on the chair near the window and took out her cell phone. Cathy sat down on the chair next to Linda’s bed and smiled at her daughter. Even though Linda just ate her breakfast, she pried the lid off of the container and took out one of the pancakes to eat. It was a quiet morning so far at the hospital while Cathy and Joann visited Linda.
