It was around 9 pm and Cathy and Joann were anxiously waiting to hear from the doctor. Joann fiddled with her cell phone while Cathy listened to the news on the television. The new night nurse walked into the room and relayed the message that Dr. Giovanni will be in to speak with them soon. She also told them that Linda is in the post-operating room and is doing fine.
Cathy smiled at Joann from across the room, “didn’t I say that she will be fine?”
Joann got up and walked over to her aunt to hug her, “I know, she’s strong.”
About seven minutes passed and Dr. Giovanni walked into the room with Dr. Johns. He told Cathy and Joann that Linda came through the surgery with no problems. They were able to remove the peculiar object from inside her head, and sent it out to be examined. Cathy asked if Linda has woken up yet and Dr. Johns spoke up and said not yet. They are anticipating that she should wake up soon though. Dr. Giovanni told Cathy that Linda will be transported back into her room as soon as her vitals stay consistent. And that her stay at the hospital will be at least for a couple of days so that they can observe her.
“That’s okay, as long as she wakes up and is back to her bubbly self,” Cathy said.
Cathy walked up to Dr. Giovanni and shook his hand, “thank you doctor for helping my daughter.”
Dr. Giovanni smiled at Cathy and nodded his head, “Dr. Johns will be taking care of her now.”
Dr. Johns told Cathy that she will stop back in about an hour when Linda is back in her room. Cathy thanked her as the two doctors walked out. Even though the doctors told Cathy that Linda isn’t awake yet, she has high hopes that Linda will be on her way back to normal. Joann walked up to her aunt once again and hugged her. The feeling of stress and anxiety has lifted and hope fills them both.
Joann sat back down in one of the chairs and text her friend Marcy. She told her that Linda’s surgery went well and that she should be back in her room soon. As Marcy texted Joann back ten minutes later, a transporter wheeled Linda’s bed into the room. After the transporter left the room, Cathy and Joann looked at Linda as she lay there sleeping. They saw the majority of Linda’s head was wrapped in white gauze. Cathy’s eyes teared up as she picked up her daughter’s hand.
Joann was stunned. She didn’t expect to see her cousin’s head all wrapped up. She took a picture of Linda and sent it to Marcy with a sad emoji face. Marcy replied back with a sad emoji face. Just then, Linda moved her hand that her mom was holding. Cathy watched to see if Linda would wake up. Joann looked up from her cell phone and watched as Linda slowly opened her eyes. Linda glanced around with her eyes only and tried to focus.
“Hi sweetheart,” Cathy said.
Linda looked at her mom, and then Joann. She asked with a hoarse voice, “mom, what happened?”
Joann smiled at her cousin while Cathy told her that she had to have surgery. Her mom told her that they had to remove an object from the inside of her head. Linda looked confused as she raised her hand to touch her head. Cathy tried to stop her but Linda felt the bandages that covered her head. Cathy reassured Linda that she was going to feel better now. Joann was afraid that Linda would be sad that she didn’t have any hair, but it didn’t seem to bother her.
“My head is sore,” Linda said.
“Yes dear, it’s going to be because they had to cut you open,” Cathy said.
“It’s good to see you awake again,” Joann smiled.
The nurse that was on duty walked in and saw that Linda was awake, “there you are. It’s good to see that you are awake now,” she said.
The nurse told her that she was going to see about getting her something to eat, and asked what she likes. After Linda carefully told her pudding, the nurse left the room. Cathy and Joann couldn’t stop smiling. They were so relieved to see Linda awake and talking.
