It was around one o’clock in the afternoon and Auntie walked down the hall toward the front living room. Mia was sitting at the end of the hall and watched as Auntie walked toward her. Are we going to play with the red dot, Mia thought. Auntie found out how much Mia likes to play with the red laser light. Mia also loves to jump, so Auntie would grab her laser light and shine it on the walls in the hall for Mia to jump at and chase after.
Mia watched as Auntie said something to Mom in the living room, and then walked back to her bedroom. Oh, I guess not right now, Mia thought as she looked at the bare wall. Dukee walked into the family room and looked at Mia at end of the hall. Mia stood up and walked towards Dukee. Dukee met Mia halfway to the center of the hallway.
“What’s going on?” Dukee asked.
“Nothing, I was hoping that Auntie was going to shine the red light on the wall but she didn’t,” Mia said.
“Oh, yeah she’s busy doing something on her laptop,” Dukee said.
“Well, I’ll just play with one of my toys I guess,” Mia said.
“We could bat that ball back and forth,” Dukee pointed at the ball that was about a foot away from her.
Mia looked at the ping pong ball, “okay, that sounds like fun.”
Mia turned and tapped the ball as she walked to the other end of the hallway. Dukee waited patiently for Mia to swat the ball to him. Mia positioned the ping pong ball in front of her and then swatted at it. The ball first hit the baseboard of the wall, bounced off, and then rolled toward the center of the hallway. Mia giggled and then ran to retrieve the ball.
“Let me try that again,” she said.
Dukee watched as Mia rolled the ball back towards her end of the hallway.
“Okay, hit it right here,” Dukee bent over and stretched his front paws out.
Mia took her right front paw and hit the ball. This time she hit it straight down to Dukee. Dukee stopped the ball with his paws and then swatted at it. He hit it so hard that it flew up, hit the wall, and bounced right past Mia. Mia ran after it as it bounced towards the front door. She noticed that Mom looked back at her as she grabbed the ball. Mia looked at Mom and then lightly tapped it toward the hallway as she heard Mom say something to her.
“What did she say?” Dukee asked.
“She just noticed that it was the ball that we are playing with,” Mia tapped the ball to Dukee.
“Oh,” Dukee stepped forward and tapped the ball back to Mia.
Mia crouched low to the floor and wiggled her back end as the ball rolled towards her. She pounced at the ball and hit it. This time the ball flew right past Dukee and bounced into the family room. Dukee turned around and ran after it. The ball rolled under the chaise lounge chair. Mia watched Dukee as he looked under the chaise but couldn’t get it. Mia ran down the hall and over to the chaise.
“I’ll get it,” Mia crouched down and crawled underneath it.
Dukee watched and waited for Mia to hit the ball out from under the chair. The ball had rolled to the wall and the back of the chair. Mia stretched her body out and reached for the ball. Because the ball had a slippery surface she couldn’t grab it with her claws. Mia tapped the ball and watched as it slowly rolled across the floor to one side of the chair. Dukee ran over to the ball and tapped it but it rolled back under the chair.
“Hey, stop that,” Mia yelled.
“Sorry,” Dukee backed up.
Mia crept up close to the ball again and tapped it back out to the one side. Then she turned and carefully crept toward the ball making sure that it was out from under the chair. When she saw the ball roll towards the bookcase, she crawled out from under the chair. Mia stood up and shook her body to fix her fur.
“Nice job,” Dukee looked at Mia.
“Thank you,” she walked over to the ball.
Dukee walked toward the hallway and waited for Mia. Mia tapped the ball along as she walked toward Dukee.
“Here you go,” Mia left the ball by Dukee and then trotted to the other end of the hall.
Dukee positioned the ball in front of himself and then aimed it toward Mia. When Mia was ready, Dukee hit the ball rather hard but right to her. When Mia heard Mom’s power recliner she stopped and looked. Mom was getting up for some reason so Mia had to find out why. Dukee then laid down where he was in the family room. Mia watched and followed Mom as she walked down the hallway.
I guess the game is over, for now, Dukee thought as he watched them walk by.
