The sun is shining bright and the temperature is pleasant. Dukee had just come in from the screened porch in the backyard and walked into the front living room. He jumped up onto the side table and sniffed the plastic pumpkin that was put there. Looks like it’s that time of year again, he thought.
Mia just finished eating some of her dry food and walked over to the kitty tower.
“That was quite a storm we had wasn’t it?” Mia looked at Dukee.
“Yes, it was. It made a lot of rain and wind but not much thunder,” Dukee sat down at the end of the table.
“Well, I don’t like thunder anyways so that’s good. As it was, there was one big boom that scared me,” Mia hopped up into the tunnel part of the kitty tower.
“Yeah I know, but you came back out shortly after it so that’s good,” Dukee looked at Mia.
“Yes, that’s true. Well, you were out so I figured that I could tough it out too,” Mia said.
“Well, I knew that Auntie and your Mom would see that we stayed safe,” Dukee said.
“Yes, they did. I know that Mom didn’t sleep much the night before last though. I think that she was worried,” Mia said.
“Well, a storm like that can make anyone a little anxious,” Dukee looked out the front window.
Just then, a brownish-colored lizard climbed up from below the window and onto the screen.
“Well, look who it is,” Dukee said.
“Hi kiddos, I see you survived the storm,” Larry the lizard said.
“Hi Larry, it’s good to see that you did too,” Mia repositioned herself in the tunnel.
“Where did you stay during the storm?” Dukee asked.
“Well, I found a hole in a pine tree and hunkered down inside of there. I kept dry for the most part, and was out of the nasty wind,” Larry looked at Mia.
“Well, that’s good to hear. Was your family with you?” Dukee asked.
“My wife and the three youngest ones were but the others were visiting other families at the time,” Larry said.
“Oh, that’s good.” Mia looked at Larry.
“When I took a walk this morning, I noticed that one of your humans was out in the yard. She was picking up a lot of debris from the trees,” Larry said.
“Yeah, that was Auntie, she’s my human. I watched her from this window for a while,” Dukee said.
“Mom and I slept in this morning since we didn’t sleep much the night before last,” Mia said.
“Well it’s just good to see that you all are alright and no damage was done to your home,” Larry said.
“So what have you been doing lately?” Mia asked.
Larry went on to tell Mia and Dukee that his wife had him remodeling their home prior to the storm. He said that he was making a new room for her with some twigs that he had to search hard for. And now that the storm went through, he said that he has to start all over, but the twigs are easier to find. Larry also told him that his oldest child and wife had their first batch of children.
“So, that means you’re a grandfather then, right?” Dukee asked.
“Yes, I sure am. Six grandkids,” Larry said.
“Wow… Congratulations,” Mia said.
“Thank you,” Larry nodded. “Well, I must get going now. I’m supposed to be looking for some good twigs and my wife doesn’t even know that I left.”
“Okay, well it was good to see you again Larry,” Dukee said.
“Yes indeed. See you next time,” Larry climbed down the window.
“Take care Larry,” Mia called out.
Mia and Dukee watched and waited to see Larry scurry out of the flowerbed.
“Well, that was a nice surprise,” Mia looked at Dukee.
“Yes, it was. It’s good to know that he and his family are doing well,” Dukee said.
“Yes, it is. I hope that the rest of our friends made it through the storm okay,” Mia looked out the window.
“Yes, I hope that they did too,” Dukee licked his front right leg.
Mia and Dukee looked out the window and quietly prayed to themselves. They both prayed that Carrie the cardinal and her family, and Rafael and his humans were doing alright. They also prayed for all the other animals and humans that might be having a rough time since the storm.
