Dukee was lying on the blanket on top of Mia’s litter box cabinet and looking out the window. He was watching two squirrels chasing each other in the front yard and around the tree. Mia walked into the living room and hopped up onto the table where her food and water bowls are.
“Did you know that Mom’s birthday is today?” Mia peeked around the kitty tower at Dukee.
“Yes, that’s why we had company yesterday,” Dukee looked at her.
“Oh, that explains the new items over there that I investigated this morning,” Mia looked toward the chair in the corner.
“Yes, those are your Mom’s gifts that she got from them and Auntie,” Dukee said.
“Well, I’m going to give her extra attention today,” Mia walked over to her food dish.
“That’s good, she’ll like that. Hey, is that… No, I guess not,” Dukee watched as a brown bird landed and flew off right away.
“Who did you think you saw?” Mia asked while chewing her food.
“Oh, I thought Carrie landed in the grass, but it wasn’t her,” Dukee said.
Mia finished eating and then walked over to her water bowl for a drink. Dukee blinked his eyes a couple of times as he watched a black snake about three feet long slither in the grass.
“Mia, look, it’s a snake,” Dukee said.
“A snake?” Mia ran to the window sill. “Where?”
“It’s by that box thing out there, slithering toward the ditch,” Dukee peered out the window.
“Oh, I see it,” Mia watched how it slowly moved into the ditch. “Where do you think it’s going?”
“Maybe the canal,” Dukee watched as it disappeared into the culvert.
Mia squished her face up against the window, and then stepped back and looked around the framing of the window.
“What are you doing?” Dukee asked.
“I was seeing if that lizard that has been teasing me lately was around,” Mia turned around.
“Oh, I know which one you’re talking about. Yeah, he doesn’t say anything, he just stares into the window at you,” Dukee licked the top of his paw.
“Yeah, and he looks like he is doing pushups sometimes,” Mia hopped down to the floor.
“Where are you going?” Dukee looked back.
“To my room. I’m going to give Mom some birthday love,” Mia walked past the leather sofa.
“Oh, okay,” Dukee turned back to the window.
Dukee decided to groom himself, while Mia trotted down the hallway, through the family room, and into her bedroom. Mom was sitting on her bed watching television when Mia jumped up onto the bed. She rubbed the side of her head on Mom’s foot and then walked up and licked Mom’s shin. Here’s a kiss for you Mom, Mia thought as she licked her leg again.
