After the squirrels had left Mia hooped down and saw one of her toys. It was sort of tubular and very light so when she hits it, it moves easily. She batted it and it went rolling into the hall. She hit it again and it rolled into the family room. Mia has very strong arms and hits very hard so things move quickly, including a human arm or hand.
She stopped when she heard a sound come from Dukee’s room. Mia stood there and waited. Just then Dukee slowly walked out of his bedroom.
“What are you doing?” Dukee yawned.
“I’m playing with my toy,” she said.
“Oh, it must have been a dream I had then,” Dukee yawned again.
“Why, what did you think you heard?” Mia sat down.
“I thought I heard a whistle or something like that,” Dukee sat down.
“Nope, no whistle here, but what did you dream about?” Mia licked the top of her paw.
“Well, I was in this cage somewhere and there were dogs in cages too. So there was a lot of barking and growling. The dogs seemed excited yet grumpy at the same time,” Dukee scratched his neck with his back leg.
“Why were you in a cage?” Mia asked.
“I don’t know but it was kind of scary… Every so often a man dressed all in black would come in and blow a whistle. He would then point to a cage and another man would get that dog,” Dukee said.
“Wow, that’s a strange dream,” Mia looked at Dukee.
“Yeah, I know… I don’t remember much more,” Dukee stood up and walked over to the cardboard barn.
“Did you ever get out of the cage?” Mia asked.
“Not that I can remember,” Dukee walked into the barn and clawed the scratchboards.
Dukee stopped clawing and peeked his head out the barn door, “Dreams like that make me appreciate the life I have.”
“Yeah, I think that I would feel the same way,” Mia batted her toy.
Dukee clawed the scratchboards again and then walked out. He stretched his back by arching it and then bent down forward and up.
“It kind of makes you wonder where these dreams come from,” Dukee looked at Mia.
“Yeah, because a dream like that makes no sense… You hadn’t seen anything like that, have you?” Mia looked at Dukee.
“No, so that’s what I mean, where did it come from?” Dukee licked his paw.
“Yeah, that’s weird,” Mia walked over to her toy.
Mia batted her toy softly this time and it rolled over by Dukee. Dukee looked down at it and batted it back to her. They did that a couple of times until Mia heard Mom moving in the bedroom.
“I think Mom might be getting up,” Mia trotted toward her room.
Dukee walked over to the sliding glass door and looked outside. He saw a squirrel sitting on a branch in the tree eating something. He heard the birds chirping, and then saw one fly down and land in the tree. The squirrel didn’t mind the bird there at all, he just continued to nibble on whatever he had. Dukee sat there and enjoyed the fact that he wasn’t stuck in a cage somewhere. He felt happy sitting right where he was and he knew he had loved ones around.
