It was around seven-thirty in the morning and it was raining hard outside. Dukee ate his breakfast and insisted on going out onto the back screened porch. The wind was blowing but Dukee didn’t seem to mind it this time. Wow, this is as bad as that last storm we had, he thought. Dukee hopped up onto the stool by the screen and sniffed the blowing air.
Mia was in the front living room looking out the narrow window by the front door. She watched as the wind blew the rain and small branches forcefully to the ground. Wow, I hope that all our friends are safe out there, she thought. The wind constantly blew the branches of the tree in the front yard and shook off more of the acorns. Well, that makes it easier for the squirrels, she thought. Mia decided to play with the pink mouse that was laying about two feet away from her.
Auntie walked toward the sliding glass door to check on Dukee. When he saw her, he walked up to the door. Auntie let him inside and then went back to her bedroom. Dukee looked down the hallway and saw Mia playing with her toy. He casually walked in by her and sat down about two feet away.
“It’s awfully windy out there isn’t it?” Mia asked him.
“Yes, a little bit. The birds back there even had a difficult time flying,” Dukee said.
“Yeah, I bet. I hope that Carrie and Harold are okay,” Mia laid down.
“I’m sure that they are. They made it through the last one alright,” Dukee licked his left front paw.
“Yes, that’s true… It looks like it’s raining hard out there too. I’m happy that there haven’t been any loud booms this time,” Mia glanced back out the window.
“Yeah, the wind was blowing a little rain onto the back porch so I got sprinkled on a little. But yes, I’m glad that there hasn’t been any thunder this time, you big chicken,” Dukee snickered.
“Hey, you don’t care for that loud noise either,” Mia hissed at Dukee.
“I know, I’m just teasing you. You’re so sensitive sometimes,” Dukee turned around to walk away.
“Where are you going?” Mia looked at Dukee.
“Well, you seem sort of cranky this morning so I thought I’d leave you alone,” Dukee looked back at Mia.
“Oh, I’m sorry. I do get a little nervous with these storms,” Mia said.
Dukee turned back around and sat down, “I understand. But your Mom and Auntie always make sure that we are safe.”
“Yes, that’s true. I just need to relax and breathe,” Mia inhaled and then exhaled.
Do you want to chase me? I’ll run so that you can,” Dukee asked.
Mia giggled, “no, not at the moment.”
Just then a big gust of wind rattled the wreath on the outside of the front door. Dukee and Mia looked at the door.
“What was that?” Mia lowered her ears.
Dukee carefully crept up to the narrow window by the door and looked outside, “I don’t see anything. It was probably just the wind,” Dukee looked back at Mia.
“Okay… I think that I’m going to go in by my Mom,” Mia said as she trotted down the hallway.
Dukee looked back out the window and watched the tree branches move, “a nap sounds good to me right now.”
Dukee walked out of the front living room, down the hall, and into his bedroom. Auntie was sitting on the bed and working on her laptop, so Dukee jumped up and laid down by her feet. He glanced at her and then put his head down. Mia jumped up onto her bed in her room and rubbed her neck on her Mom’s foot. Mom reached out and gave Mia some loving neck scratches, which made Mia happy. She then lay down at the foot of the bed and watched the people on the TV.
