It was around 5:30 in the morning and Mom was sleeping on her side. Mia wanted her breakfast so she used her front paw and tapped it on Mom’s back. Mia waited for Mom to respond but she didn’t. So, just as Mia started to climb up onto Mom’s side, she woke up. Mia backed up when she heard Mom groan but Mom didn’t get up. Mom, I want my breakfast, Mia thought. Because Mom still didn’t get up, Mia climbed up onto Mom’s pillow and carefully reached around to her face. Mia tapped Mom’s nose twice with her paw. Just like that Mom opened her eyes and saw Mia staring at her.
Get up Mom, Mia thought while looking at her. Mom told Mia that it’s a little early, as she slowly sits up. Mia hopped down to the floor and watched to make sure that Mom was going to put on her slippers. That was a good indication that she was getting up then. As Mom slipped her feet into her slippers, Mia hopped and ran to the bedroom door.
“Breakfast!” Mia said.
Dukee was asleep up on the shelf above the hallway that led into the front living room. He woke up when he heard Mia run fast out of her bedroom. He watched as Mom slowly walked into the kitchen to get Mia’s food. It’s not morning yet, it’s still dark out, Dukee thought. A few minutes passed and Mia ran back into her bedroom, anxious for her breakfast. Mom slowly followed her with her bowl of shredded chicken/tuna Fancy Feast.
Dukee sniffed the air as Mom walked through. Now I’m hungry, he thought. Carefully he got up and arched his back for a big stretch. He made his way back to the top of the cabinet and down to the counter. He walked along the counter and then hopped down to the floor in the family room. Dukee walked into his bedroom and glanced at Auntie while she slept in their bed. He knew that Auntie wasn’t going to get up this early to feed him breakfast so, he nibbled on the dry food in his dish.
When Dukee was done eating, he jumped up onto the stool by the window in their room. Some movement in the neighbors back yard caught his eye. What is that, he thought. As Dukee focused his eyes and watched, two deer stepped into the shining yard light. Oh, I haven’t seen them in a while, he thought. Gracefully one deer walked over to the fruit tree and nibbled on some of the leaves. The other one stood still and looked around as if it was on guard. Dukee laid down on the stool and just watched them.
In Mia’s room, Mom went back to bed and Mia finished her breakfast. When Mia was done eating, she licked up whatever gravy might have landed around her mouth. She jumped up onto the window sill in her bedroom to finish cleaning her face, when she saw the deer next door. Mom, there’s deer out here, Mia thought as she looked at her mom sleeping.
“Oh well, maybe she’ll see them next time,” Mia whispered.
As Mia finished cleaning her face, she watched what the deer were doing. The one deer that was eating stopped and stood guard, while the other deer walked up to the tree to eat. Mia looked at the big ears on the deer’s heads, and watched how they moved and twitched much like hers does. I bet that they have good hearing too, she thought.
When the deer’s were done munching on the leaves, one by one they turned around and walked back into the darkness. I guess they had enough to eat, Mia thought. The neighbor’s yard light doesn’t shine past the other trees further out in the yard so the deer tend to disappear. Mia then, hopped down onto the floor and decided to get a drink of water. She walked out of her bedroom, trotted through the family room, down the hall, and into the front Living room where her other dishes are.
Because the deer were gone now and nothing else was happening, Dukee stretched his left arm out and laid his head down. I’ll take a little nap before Auntie gets up, he thought. He glanced out the window one last time and then closed his eyes. In the front living room, Mia licked her mouth from the splatter of the water that she drank. She then walked over to the window sill and looked out. Because it was early and still dark outside, no one else seemed to be up yet. I guess I’ll just play with my toys, Mia thought.
