Dukee was lying on the blanket on top of the litter box cabinet licking the hair on his side. Mia crawled out of the cube part of the kitty tower and walked over to her dish to nibble on some food. While Mia was eating, Dukee saw a female cardinal land on a branch of the tree in the front yard. He watched as she groomed her feathers of her one wing.
“Mia, look at this,” Dukee said.
Mia walked over to the window sill, “what?”
“Look, that cardinal is grooming herself like she is copying me,” Dukee said.
Mia looked up at the tree and saw the cardinal. Just then, the female cardinal flew to the window and landed on the small ledge just outside of it. Mia backed up a little but watched the bird. Dukee crept closer to the window to see what the cardinal was doing.
After the cardinal got her footing stable on the ledge she looked up at Mia and Dukee.
“Hi, my name is Carrie. What are your names?”
“I’m Mia,” she said with an unsure tone.
“My name is Dukee. It’s nice to meet you Carrie.”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you both… I often saw you two, but forgive me for not introducing myself sooner. My husband is always hurrying me along,” Carrie said.
“Where is he now?” Mia asked.
“Oh, I left him home this time. I told him that it was about time to talk to the neighbors,” Carrie said.
“Well, I’m glad you did. I often see you too flying around in the backyard,” Dukee said.
“Yes, we enjoy all the trees that are back there. But we also fly quite a distance some days and see different things,” Carrie fluffed her feathers.
“You sure are a pretty bird,” Mia said.
“Thank you my dear, you are a very beautiful cat.
“Thank you,” Mia licked her shoulder fur.
And Dukee, you are very handsome too,” Carrie said.
Thank you Carrie,” Dukee cocked his head.
“I’m sure that we are going to be great friends and I have got some good stories to tell you too. But, I must be going so I will talk to you both soon,” Carrie spread her wing out and took a bow.
“Bye Carrie,” Mia said.
Carrie flew up and into the sky. Dukee watched her until he could no longer see her.
“Wow, she’s pretty nice huh?” Dukee said.
“Yes she is… She said I am beautiful,” Mia shook her whole body so her fur fluffed up.
“Don’t let it go to your head now,” Dukee turned around and hopped down.
“Well, I am beautiful… You heard it right from the birds beak,” Mia walked over to get a drink of water.
Dukee walked down the hall to go to his bedroom. He felt that it was time for a nap. Mia drank some water from her dish and hopped down off the table. She felt pretty special being told that she is beautiful. She trotted down the hallway and into her bedroom. Mom was sitting on the bed with her laptop. Mia jumped up by her and walked over and rubbed her body on Mom’s arm. Sort of like letting Mom know that she is beautiful.
Mom pet Mia from her head, down her back and to the tip of her tail. Just as Mom was going to pet her again Mia turned and swiped at her. That’s enough, Mia thought. Then Mia hopped down off the bed and jumped up onto the window sill. She sat there gazing out the window and thought about the new friends that she has met.
