Mia sat and looked out the narrow window by the front door and watched a squirrel. It was sitting in the grass eating an acorn when another squirrel ran past it. Mia watched as the other squirrel ran all the way up the tree and jumped onto the roof of the house. She looked up at the ceiling when she heard the rumble of the squirrel’s feet as it ran around. What is that squirrel doing, she thought.
Dukee was on the leather stool in his room when he heard the rumbling on the roof. He looked up at the ceiling and followed the direction of the sound with his eyes. I wonder what that is, he thought. Auntie was sitting on her bed and told Dukee that it’s probably just squirrels. Dukee looked back out the window and wondered if he would see them run across the fence.
Meanwhile in the front living room, Mia had jumped up onto the kitty tower and crawled into the tunnel part of it. She looked up when she heard the squirrel running over her head. But then, she looked back out the window and stared at the tree branches. She waited for the squirrel to jump onto them. It wasn’t long before the squirrel did jump and grabbed onto a thin branch. It bounced up and down a couple of times before it scurried onto a thicker branch. Mia enjoyed squirrel watching as long as they weren’t running on the roof. That squirrel must have seen the other squirrel down on the grass still because it scurried down the tree trunk and over to it.
Back in Dukee’s bedroom, he chattered at a group of Robin’s that had landed in the side yard. Where did all of you come from, he thought. The Robin’s hopped all around, just glancing at everything. Dukee wondered what they were looking for. They weren’t pecking the ground like the Ibis birds do. He watched them for another minute or two before they suddenly flew up. Oh well, he thought as he laid his head down.
Because the Robin birds flew toward the front of the house, Mia saw the group of them fly over. Wow, those are pretty birds, Mia thought. Just then, both squirrels ran across the driveway. Hmm, I wonder what scared them, Mia thought. Mia glanced around out the window but didn’t see anything unusual. She licked her front paw and then decided to get something to eat. She backed up out of the tunnel and hopped down onto the coffee table. It’s been a pretty quiet day in the house so far. Soon the Christmas baking will begin and Mia can’t wait to help her mom.
