Mia was sitting in the family room by the scratch post when Dukee walked over to her.
“Did you hear?” Dukee looked at Mia.
“Hear what?” Mia gracefully licked the fur on her shoulder.
“Auntie said that there’s a hur, huri… Hurricane. Yeah, that’s it, a hurricane is coming,” Dukee said.
“What’s a hurricane?” Mia looked at Dukee.
“It’s a really big storm that’s full of wind and rain,” Dukee said.
“Well, how is that storm different from any other storms that we have?” Mia licked her paw.
“Well, with this storm it’s really big and the winds are stronger and more dangerous. And there can be so much rain that streets and buildings can get flooded,” Dukee sat down.
Mia widened her eyes, “are we going to be alright here?”
“Well, I’m sure that Auntie and your Mom will make sure that we’ll be safe here,” Dukee said.
“I sure hope so,” Mia glanced out the sliding glass door.
Dukee walked toward the sliding glass door and watched as some more rain started to fall. Mia trotted after Dukee to the door and looked out. She saw the bushes by the fence move a little.
“Is it here?” Mia asked.
“No not yet, but I’m sure that we will know when it is here,” Dukee looked at Mia.
The rain started to pour down harder and the sky was completely covered with clouds. Mia turned and started to walk away when Dukee asked where she was going.
“Where are you going?”
“I’m going in by Mom, you made me nervous,” Mia said.
Dukee turned around, “don’t be nervous, we’ll be okay. And I’ll protect you.”
Mia continued to walk into the front living room where her Mom was sitting. She hopped up onto the arm of Mom’s recliner and waited to be petted. Mom pet Mia’s head and then scratched around her neck. Mom told Mia that everything will be alright. Mia looked at her Mom and thought, it was almost like Mom heard our conversation.
Dukee walked into the front living room and up to the narrow window by the front door. He looked out the window and saw the rain hitting the sidewalk. I wonder when the storm will get here, he thought. Dukee jumped up onto the side table, looked toward Mom, and saw Mia watching him. Dukee walked to the end of the table, sat down, and looked out the window. He watched as the wind picked up and blew the rain against the window.
Mia was startled and looked at the window. Mom reassured Mia that everything is okay. Mia hopped down and trotted over to the coffee table. Dukee looked and watched Mia as she jumped up onto the table. All this rain is making me thirsty, Mia thought. Dukee looked back out the window while Mia drank her water. Looks like another rainy day to me, Dukee thought. When Mia was done drinking, she walked over to the kitty tower. I guess I’ll just lay down and wait for the hurricane to get here, Mia thought as she climbed into the cube.
We do have a hurricane coming our direction, but don’t you worry. Dukee and Mia live in a pretty solid house that has withstood hurricanes in the past. You should hear from Mia and Dukee again on Friday as long as we have electricity.
