It was almost 8 o’clock at night and Mom and Auntie were in the front living room watching television. Dukee was laying on his papers in the family room when Mia walked up to him.
“I talked to Rafael last night, and he said that his home and his humans made it through the storm alright,” Mia sat down.
“Oh, that’s good. Where did you talk to him at?” Dukee asked.
“At the front window. He scared me though. I was looking out the window into the darkness when all of a sudden he appeared,” Mia giggled.
“Yes, I noticed that he has a way of doing that,” Dukee sat up. “Speaking of last night, did you do something by my bedroom door?”
“Well, I didn’t mean to wake you if I did. I peeked into your room to see if you were sleeping, and when I went to turn around, my toenail scratched the floor,” Mia said.
“I thought I heard something, and I figured it was probably you,” Dukee scratched his ear.
“Yeah, if you were awake, I was going to tell you about Rafael,” Mia watched Dukee as he rubbed his ear with his front paw.
“Oh, well thank you for letting me know about him. Now all we need to hear from is Carrie,” Dukee said.
“Well, they are birds, so I’m sure that they flew to safety. But it will be nice to know that Carrie and her family are doing well,” Mia said.
As Dukee moved to itch his back, he bumped his toy mouse and it squeaked.
Mia giggled and looked behind Dukee, “those mice that Auntie gave us are silly.”
“What, you don’t like yours? I like it, it seems more real when it squeaks,” Dukee turned around and tapped the mouse.
“I guess it’s okay. I don’t know what a real mouse sounds like,” Mia watched Dukee.
“Oh, well, I don’t either, but I assume a mouse would sound like that. Why would the humans make it squeak if that’s not what it does?” Dukee hit it to Mia.
“That’s a good point,” Mia tapped the furry mouse.
Squeak squeak squeak the mouse went. Mia took her left front paw and swatted the mouse. It rolled across the floor and past the cardboard barn, squeak squeak squeak. Dukee jumped at it and swatted it back toward Mia. Squeak squeak squeak the mouse rolled. Mia put her front left paw next to the mouse and looked at Dukee. He watched to see which way Mia was going to hit it. Mia lifted her paw and swatted it off to the right side of Dukee. Squeak squeak squeak the mouse rolled toward the sofa.
“This is fun,” Mia wiggled and waited to see where Dukee was going to hit the mouse next.
Just then, Mia heard Mom’s power recliner. She turned around and looked down the hallway. Dukee sat by the mouse and waited to see if Mom was coming toward them. Mia watched as Mom walked down the hallway on her way to the bathroom. Mia met up with her mom and followed her into the bathroom. Dukee swatted the mouse and watched it roll where Mia was previously sitting. Squeak squeak squeak. That would have went right to her if she was there, Dukee thought.
Dukee left the mouse and walked down the hall and into the front living room. He walked around the front of the reclining sofa that Auntie was sitting on and looked around at Mia’s toys. Auntie asked him if he was having fun playing with his mouse. Dukee looked up at her to acknowledge what she asked. He sniffed Mia’s black tent that is on the floor and then walked over to the litter box cabinet. Dukee jumped up onto the cabinet and looked out the window. Nope, no frogs, he thought. So, Dukee laid down near the plastic Jack o lantern and licked the hair on his side.
It wasn’t long before Mia ran ahead of Mom as she walked down the hallway and into the front living room. Dukee glanced over his shoulder to make sure that Mia wasn’t going to surprise him. Instead, Mia jumped up onto the table by the kitty tower and decided to munch on some of her food. It was a fun filled evening of horror movies and kitty playtime.
