It was around 8:30 pm when Dukee jumped up onto the side table in the front living room. Auntie and Mom were in there watching television and Mia was on the floor by Mom’s foot. Dukee walked to the end of the table and hopped down onto the blanket that lays on top of the litter box cabinet. He stepped up close to the window and looked out of it. Dukee took his front right paw and lightly tapped the window pane.
Mia was watching Dukee the whole time and got up to see what Dukee was doing. She walked over to the table next to the kitty tower and jumped up onto it. Carefully she walked over toward the window sill and looked at Dukee.
“There’s a frog,” Dukee whispered.
Mia stepped onto the window sill about a foot away from Dukee and looked down. The large green frog that sat on the ledge just outside of the window looked up at Mia. Dukee stepped backward onto the blanket and sat down. Mia now touched the window pane and realized that she can’t touch the frog. They both know that the frog is outside but yet they still try to touch them each time they see one.
Just then, startled by the frog's movement, Mia jumped, “oh my gosh.”
Mom and Auntie looked at Mia as she looked back at them. Mia made a chattering noise at the window to throw off what Mom and Auntie might have heard. Dukee laid down on the blanket and snickered at Mia. Mom and Auntie went back to watching the movie on the TV while Mia looked at the frog that was now hanging on the window. Dukee twitched the end of his tail a couple of times while he watched the frog creep up higher on the window.
Mia turned around, walked onto the table, and then onto the kitty tower. She crept in between the tower cube and the post to watch the frog. Dukee then crept closer to the window sill and watched as the frog moved down to the bottom of the window again. As they both kept at least one eye on the frog they heard Mom’s power recliner. Mia looked at her mom quickly and saw that she was just putting her footrest up. Just as Mia looked back at the frog, she saw a white moth fluttering near the window.
Dukee and Mia watched as the frog sat still and waited for the moth to get closer to it. Just as they waited, the frog quickly snatched and chomped on the moth. It happened so fast that Mia and Dukee didn’t realize it until the moth was nowhere to be seen. They looked at each other with amazement and shook their heads. When Auntie put her footrest down, Dukee looked behind him. Auntie got up to go to the other room so Dukee got up and followed.
Mia watched as Dukee and Auntie left the living room. Mom stayed sitting in her chair so Mia turned back to the window. The frog crept down off the window ledge and disappeared. Mia stepped up to the window and looked around but no more frog. Oh, I guess he had enough to eat, Mia thought. She backed up onto the kitty tower, turned, and hopped down. She trotted over to Mom’s recliner and reached her front paws up. Mom looked at Mia and gave her a couple of scratches on the top of her head.
Mia enjoys attention but only when it’s on her terms. She jumped up onto the arm of Mom’s chair and laid down. Okay, Mom, you can pet me meow, Mia thought. Mom massaged Mia’s neck a couple of times and did two strokes down her back. As Mom went to give her one more stroke, Mia looked at Mom. Mom knew by the look that Mia gave her that she had enough, and pulled her hand away. I have trained her well, Mia thought.
