During the night Mia heard something outside of her bedroom window. She got up from resting on Mom’s slipper and jumped up onto the window sill. She focused her eyes on the darkness outside and saw a frequent visitor. The opossum was nosing around right below her window by the house. It heard Mia as she jumped up onto the window sill and looked up at her. Out of instinct, the opossum hissed at her. Mia heard the hiss and put her ears back. She did not expect that sound to come out of it. She realized that the opossum couldn’t get her, so she just watched it.
The opossum nosed around by the window for a few minutes but then moved on past the screened porch. Mia hopped down from the window sill and walked out of her bedroom. Dukee was laying on top of the backrest of the chaise chair and looked up as Mia walked past him. He watched her as she walked toward his room and peeked in. She only stopped for a few seconds and then continued into the front living room.
Dukee put his head back down until he heard Mia chattering at something in the front living room. He hopped down and casually walked down the hall to the front living room. He saw Mia standing close to the window and looking out. He walked around the front of the reclining sofa this time.
“What are you talking to up here?” Dukee jumped up onto the Litter box cabinet.
“Oh, you scared me,” Mia jumped back.
Dukee looked out the window, “Oh, it’s that armadillo.”
“Yeah, and before I came out here, that big opossum was by my bedroom window,” Mia looked at Dukee.
“See, we aren’t the only creatures that like to be up at night,” Dukee watched as the armadillo dug in the flower bed.
“Why do you suppose that our humans are so different that way?” Mia asked.
“I think it’s mostly because they can function better in the daylight,” Dukee said.
“When I first moved in with Auntie, she would go to work at night and come home in the morning,” Dukee said.
“So did she sleep during the day then?” Mia asked.
“Yep, some of it,” Dukee looked at Mia.
Dukee and Mia watched as the little armadillo moved on into the neighbor’s yard. Then Mia walked over to her bowl to get a drink of her water.
“Well, I’m going back by Mom,” Mia hopped down.
“Okay, see you later,” Dukee said.
Dukee jumped up to the top of the kitty tower and watched out the window. Maybe another critter will come along, he thought. He laid down and just waited. The only other thing so far, was a flying beetle landed on the screen for a brief moment. It walked around and then flew away.
Dukee’s eyes were getting a little droopy so he put his head down on his paws. He dozed off for a few minutes until he heard something hit the window screen.
“What was that?” He looked out the window.
He didn’t see anything so he put his head back down. Dukee watched out the window until he drifted off to sleep.
