It was around 6:30 am and Mia had just finished her breakfast. Mom laid back down in bed, so Mia hopped up onto the windowsill in their bedroom. She watched as the birds outside started to accumulate in the trees and bushes. She heard the soft pleasant tweets of some birds and the loud caw of the crows.
Mia watched and saw a male and female cardinal land on the fence in the backyard. Before she could finish her thought, Carrie the cardinal flew over and landed on the ledge outside of Mia's window.
“Good morning Miss Mia,” Carrie looked at her.
“Good morning Carrie, how are you?” Mia asked.
“I am doing very well thank you, and how about you?” Carry fluffed her feathers.
“I'm doing good, at least when it's not storming,” Mia looked at the sky.
“Oh does the thunder and lightning bother you, Mia?” Carrie asked.
“Yes, I don't like the thunder because of the loud booms that it makes. It sounds like fireworks and I don't like those either,” Mia looked at Carrie.
“Yes, I can understand that loud noises affect many animals,” Carrie said.
“Really?” Mia asked.
“Of course dear, some animals hear that kind of sound and fear that they are getting shot at,” Carrie explained.
“But, why would they fear that?” Mia asked.
“Well, some humans shoot some animals like deer and turkey to use as food,” Carrie said.
“Oh, well I would be afraid then too,” Mia said.
“But don't let all the loud noises scare you, Mia. You have your house to protect you. And I'm sure that you're humans try their best to keep you safe,” Carrie said.
“Yes, that's true, and she does,” Mia licked her fur on her shoulder.
Carrie heard a chirp and looked behind her. She saw her husband Harold down on the grass waiting for her.
“Well, Mia, it looks like I have to go. Harold is waiting for me,” Carrie said.
“Okay, I understand. Thank you for stopping by and I hope that you and your family have a nice day,” Mia lifted her front paw and waved.
“You enjoy your day as well, and I will stop by again soon,” Carrie flew up into the air.
Mia watched as Harold flew up from the grass to meet Carrie. Harold and Carrie flew in a circle above the yard before they flew off out of site. She’s such a nice bird, I just wish that she could visit longer, Mia thought. Mia hopped down from the window sill and walked out of her bedroom. She walked into the family room, down the hallway, and into the front living room. Dukee was sitting on the blanket on top of the litter box cabinet looking out the window.
“Good morning,” Mia jumped up onto the table where her dishes are.
“Oh, good morning Mia,” Dukee looked around the kitty tower at her.
“I just had a nice but short visit from Carrie,” Mia said and then drank some water.
“How are she and the family doing?” Dukee asked.
Mia finished drinking some of her water and walked onto the kitty tower, “Carrie’s good, but I didn’t have a chance to ask her about her children. Harold was kind of in a hurry again.”
“I wonder if Harold doesn’t like Carrie talking to us because we are a different species,” Dukee said.
“Well, if so, I don’t think that’s right. Just because we are different doesn’t mean that we aren’t nice,” Mia laid down in the cube part of the tower.
“I agree, even though we are both cats, we are different colors. Some say color can be a problem for them, but not me. I like your color Mia,” Dukee laid down.
“Thank you, I like your color too,” Mia said.
Mia and Dukee lay there and enjoyed the rest of the morning watching everything that moved outside of the window.
