Mia yawned and stretched out one back leg, took a step forward, and stretched out the other back leg. Boy, that was a good nap, she thought. She hopped down off her bed, walked out her door, and through the family room. It was pretty quiet in the house except for the sound of a television.
She walked into the front living room and no one was around. Hmm, they must have gone out, she thought. So she hopped up onto the table where her food was and started to eat.
When she finished eating, she climbed up onto her kitty tower and looked out the window. It was pretty quiet out there too except for a man down the street with a leaf blower. She watched him for a moment until a very large bird as tall as a man landed at the end of the driveway.
“Oh my goodness what is that?” Mia said.
This bird was mostly grey with a redhead and a very long pointed beak. Mia stared at it as it slowly walked into the front yard. Wow, that thing could eat me… I’m sure glad that I’m in the house, she thought.
It walked very gracefully, and carefully pecked at the ground. Mia watched its every move because she had never seen such a big bird before. Just then Dukee hopped up onto the side table and walked to the end.
“What are you watching?” Dukee looked out the window.
“Oh wow… That’s a large bird,” Dukee stared at it.
That particular bird is called a Sandhill Crane and there are usually two or more together. But this one seems to be on its own.
Mia and Dukee were entranced with it as it pecked at the ground. Cars would drive by, and the bird didn’t mind at all.
“Have you ever seen anything so big?” Mia asked.
“Nope not that big,” Dukee said.
The bird slowly walked into the next-door neighbor's yard and pecked at the ground. Dukee and Mia’s eyes followed its every move as it walked onto the driveway. Suddenly, it jumped up and flew off into the sky, where Mia and Dukee could no longer see it.
“Wow, that was a big bird,” Mia looked at Dukee.
“Yeah, it was,” Dukee said. “I’ve seen some big ones before but not that big.”
“What’s the biggest that you’ve seen?” Mia asked.
Dukee turned, walked to the other end of the table, and hopped down onto the floor.
“Well, I’ve seen what Auntie calls a turkey… that’s pretty big,” Dukee walked to the cardboard cottage and scooted inside.
Mia hopped down and trotted toward the cottage. She saw Dukee laying down in there so she laid down near it.
“What does a turkey look like?” Mia asked.
“It’s not as tall as that bird. It’s closer to the ground and it’s brown,” Dukee licked his paw.
“Sometimes it will have its feathers fluffed out so it looks even bigger,” Dukee said.
“Cool, I’ve only seen those white birds that come here, and now that big one,” Mia licked her shoulder.
