It was around 6 am and Mia had jumped up and down twice on her and Mom’s bed trying to get Mom to get up. Mia was ready for her breakfast but Mom wasn’t ready to get up yet.
Dukee hopped down from the back of the red chaise lounge chair and stretched his front legs forward. He walked into his and Aunties' bedroom and Auntie was sound asleep. He jumped up onto the desk and did a subtle meow twice but Auntie didn’t move. Dukee sat there for only a minute and then hopped down. He nibbled on a few kernels of his food and then hopped up onto the stool by the window.
Mia finally bugged Mom enough to get up, so Mia jumped down off the bed and trotted out the bedroom door. She waited for Mom as she slipped her slippers on and staggered out the door. Mia ran ahead of Mom through the kitchen and sat by the dining table. Mom walked to the refrigerator and took out the already opened package of food that Mia gets, and put the rest in her bowl.
Mom threw the empty package in the trash and carried Mia’s breakfast with her to their room. Mia ran up behind Mom and had her face in the bowl as soon as Mom set it down.
“Nom nom nom” Mia licked up the gravy.
Mom climbed back into bed and let Mia enjoy her breakfast.
Dukee hopped down off the stool and walked out into the family room. He looked toward the front living room and decided to walk to the front door window. Just then, while Dukee was walking down the hallway he heard and saw something run through the kitchen and into the dining area. When Dukee got to the front of the house he stopped and saw Mia waiting for him. She was sitting under the dining table.
“I thought that was you,” he said.
“I just had my breakfast so I’m pumped up,” she said.
“Auntie’s still sleeping so I didn’t get mine yet,” Dukee walked up to the narrow window by the front door.
Mia jumped over the small empty box that was there and trotted over to the other narrow window, “that’s why you have to bug her to get up,” Mia said.
“I do a little bit to let her know that I’m ready, but Auntie and I have an understanding that if I bug her too much, then I don’t get anything,” Dukee said.
“I guess I just know how to control my human better than you,” Mia looked at Dukee.
“No, you’re just a spoiled brat,” Dukee jumped up onto the side table.
“I’m not a brat! Spoiled, maybe, but I’m not a brat,” Mia trotted around the sofa.
She jumped up onto the kitty tower and crawled into the tunnel.
“So you mean to tell me that you don’t get feisty at times and swat at your Mom?” Dukee asked.
“Well, yeah… But I hear that you do too,” Mia said.
“Yes, you got me there, I sometimes do. But I have also learned that with age comes respect,” Dukee looked at Mia.
“What do you mean?” Mia looked at Dukee.
“As we get older you learn to respect others and who they are more. You learn from them just as they learn from us,” Dukee licked the top of his paw.
“I don’t understand,” Mia looked out the window.
“Okay, you are two years old and haven’t learned a lot yet. Mom is older than you and has learned more, therefore you need to respect her more even when you don’t like something. When you learn to respect each other more, things work out better,” Dukee said.
“Oh, I think that I understand now… When I respect Mom, she will give me more treats?” Mia looked at Dukee.
“Not necessarily but it is possible. Having respect for one another brings you closer together in a special way,” Dukee scratched his ear.
“Oh, okay… As we get older, we learn about each other and how to live with each other happily,” Mia said.
“Yes, you got it,” Dukee watched the bumble bee flying outside of the window.
“You know what? You’re pretty smart,” Mia looked at Dukee.
“Thank you, Mia,” Dukee looked at her. “I guess, that you’re not that big of a brat,” he giggled.
The two of them watched the bumble bee as it flew around by the window. Hovering there, almost as if it was watching them. Then, as quickly as it was there, it quickly flew off.
