During the night when everyone else was in bed, Mia went into the front living room to munch on some of her food.
“Nom nom nom, I like this food that Mom gives me, and it’s in such a pretty bag too,” Mia looked at the bag sitting on the corner of the table.
After Mia finished eating, she turned around and walked onto the window sill. She sat down and looked out the window. Mia watched as the bright light from the moon made a white-colored moth noticeable as it fluttered around near the window. Her head moved up and down and back and forth as the moth chased after a nat.
Just then, Mia heard a voice outside down below the window.
“Good evening Miss Mia,” Rafael popped his head up.
“Rafael, you startled me,” Mia looked at him.
“Oh, sorry about that. I thought that you might have seen me when I walked into the yard,” he moved closer to the window.
“No, I didn’t, but how are you?” Mia asked.
“I’m doing good. How did you like that storm that we had?” Rafael asked.
“It was a little scary with all the wind, but otherwise it wasn’t too bad. Was everything alright at your place?” Mia fluffed her tail.
“Yes, everything went well. My humans didn’t seem too worried about it and the house is still in one piece,” Rafael held up his front left paw and licked it.
“You weren’t outside during the storm, were you?” Mia asked.
“No, my humans made sure I stayed inside for a few days,” Rafael looked at Mia.
“Well, that’s good. It shows that they care about you,” Mia said.
“Yes, yes they do. And I see that your humans take good care of you too,” Rafael peeked through the window.
“Yeah, my Mom takes good care of me and Auntie is pretty nice too,” Mia said.
“Oh, Auntie is Dukee’s human?” Rafael asked.
“Yes, but she plays with me sometimes. I only let her pet me once in a while though,” Mia wiped her ear with her paw.
“That’s good, and yeah my humans like to try and pet me all the time, but sometimes I don’t want them to. You would think that humans would get the hint when we bite and scratch to not pet us unless we ask for it,” Rafael stretched his left arm up onto the screen.
“I know, right? Mom does that too but she’s learning when to back off,” Mia giggled.
Rafael turned his head and looked behind him. He saw what looked like an opossum walking into the front yard. Mia got closer to the window and focused on what was outside.
“That’s an opossum,” Mia said.
“Yes, I know. Sometimes they can be aggressive if they get scared,” Rafael watched as it walked across the yard.
“Oh, I didn’t know that,” Mia watched as the opossum stepped onto the driveway.
Rafael turned back around and looked at Mia, “well Mia, I’m going to get going home. I’ll talk to you another time. Tell Dukee that I said hi,” Rafael carefully dropped down into the flower bed.
“Okay, bye Rafael. Take care,” Mia watched as Rafael stepped out of the flower bed and took off like a flash across the neighbor’s driveway.
“That’s good, so far I know that two of our friends have made it through that storm okay,” Mia hopped down off of the litter box cabinet.
Mia casually walked down the hall and decided to peek into Dukee and Auntie’s bedroom. She walked quietly into the small hall and peeked in through the doorway. It looks like they are both sleeping soundly, Mia thought as she backed up. Just as Mia’s toenail made a scratch sound on the floor, Dukee popped his head up. He looked at the door but didn’t see it move. Hmm, I wonder what that was, he thought. Dukee stayed lying at the foot of the bed and listened. Mia tiptoed her way through the family room and back into her bedroom. Maybe I'm hearing things, Dukee thought as he laid his head back down.
Mia walked over to the side of her and Mom’s bed and plopped down on the rug. She licked the fur on her right shoulder and down to her paw. As she yawned, she thought about how safe she felt being inside the house and close to her human.
“I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Mia looked up at Mom sleeping on the bed.
