Mia sat on the front living room window sill watching a little green worm as it inched its way across the stucco at the base of the window outside. I haven’t seen a worm like you before, she thought. Just as she was focused on the worm, she saw a dark shadow from up above and looked up. A large black vulture landed on the top branches of the tree in the front yard. She watched the vulture as it ruffled its feathers and moved its feet side to side.
“I wonder what it’s doing?” Mia said.
“What who’s doing?” Dukee walked into the front living room.
“Oh, you startled me,” Mia looked at Dukee.
“Sorry. Who do you see out there?” Dukee jumped up onto Mia’s litter box cabinet.
“It’s a vulture on top of the tree,” Mia looked back out the window at it.
“Oh yeah, that’s a big one,” Dukee said.
“Yeah it is, and it was wiggling its feathers and stepping side to side,” Mia said.
Mia and Dukee watched the vulture as it now just sat there at the top of the tree. Dukee then glanced down when he saw a lizard creeping through the grass. He thought for a second that it might be Larry until he realized that lizard is green. Mia looked down when her eye caught the movement of a bumble bee flying toward her. The bee landed only for a second or two on each blooming flower before it moved on.
Just then, the vulture made a strange noise before it flew up and over to the tall pine trees across the street. Dukee and Mia watched it fly over to the pine tree and land on a large branch. Just as that one landed, another vulture flew down and landed next to it.
“Do you think that they are family?” Mia asked.
Dukee watched the two birds, “Yes, maybe. They seem to know each other.”
“That’s what we are since we live together, right? Family?” Mia looked at Dukee.
“Yes, I believe that we are,” Dukee reached his paw out to Mia.
Mia looked at Dukee’s paw, “what?
“Well, you said we are family so I’m showing you some love,” Dukee said.
Mia lifted her paw and tapped Dukee’s paw, “there, I like you.”
Dukee snickered and put his paw down, “I like you too.”
Dukee laid down on the blanket and looked at Mia, as she sat there by the window looking outside. This is what family is. Being together with the ones you care about, Dukee thought.
With the holiday seasons flying in fast, let us remember that it’s about spreading joy to others, and loving the ones close to you. Have a blessed week everyone.
