Auntie got up from the leather reclining sofa and walked into the family room. She looked at the sliding glass door and Dukee walked up to it when he saw her. Auntie let Dukee into the house and then went into her bedroom. Dukee casually walked down the hallway and into the front living room. Mia was laying in the tunnel part of the kitty tower looking out the window.
Dukee jumped up onto the side table, walked to the end, and sat down.
“Anything going on out here?” Dukee looked out the window.
“Nope, it’s pretty quiet,” Mia looked at Dukee.
They both watched out the window waiting to see something, but nothing was happening.
“What’s it like outside?” Mia asked.
“It’s hot,” Dukee said.
Just as Mia resituated her body in the tunnel, Dukee saw a lizard climbing up onto the ledge outside the window.
“Hey, look, I think it’s Larry,” Dukee said.
“Hi ya kids,” Larry the lizard said as he waved.
Mia looked, “Hi Larry. Where have you been?”
“I’ve been around. I finally found a nice place to live. It’s just down the street,” Larry said.
“Is it nice?” Dukee asked.
“Well, it’s nice enough for me… And as long as I don’t get chased by that dog again,” Larry brushed himself off.
“You got chased by a dog?” Mia asked.
“Yeah, on my way down here. I just happen to be walking through the yard next door when the human let their dog out. I barely snuck under the fence before it got me,” Larry said.
“Wow, you better be more careful. You’re lucky it wasn’t a cat because I’m sure it would have gotten you,” Dukee said.
“Oh yeah, I’ve encountered cats before and they are quick… Just like I’m sure you two are,” Larry pointed. “But you know what, I’m quick and small so I can hide quickly.”
“Yeah, I bet you can… I know that it’s not easy to see you in the grass,” Mia said.
“So what have you two been doing for fun lately?” Larry asked.
“Nothing much, just playing with toys and relaxing with my Auntie,” Dukee licked his paw.
“Yeah, same here… Minus the Auntie part. I play with my maid a lot,” Mia looked at Larry.
“You have a maid?” Larry asked.
Dukee spoke up before Mia could, “she’s actually her human mom, but Mia thinks that she’s so special that she needs a maid.”
“Well, she does take care of everything for me, right?” Mia looked at Dukee.
“Yeah, but it’s nicer to think of her as your mom, not a maid,” Dukee said.
“Oh, whatever… We play together though until I get bored,” Mia licked her paw.
“What else have you been doing Larry?” Dukee asked.
“Well, I went down by the water in the canal the other day and relaxed a bit. I caught me some good bugs to eat,” Larry said.
“I catch bugs sometimes when they come in the house,” Mia said.
“Oh yeah, what kind?” Larry asked.
“I don’t know, they’re just bugs,” Mia looked at Larry.
“My favorites are the small worms,” Larry rubbed his belly.
“Eww, worms? That doesn’t sound very appetizing to me,” Mia scrunched up her nose.
“Yeah, I don’t care to eat any bugs,” Dukee said.
“Well, they are good eating to me and I ran across quite a few that day… Well, I know that my visit is short, but I must be going now. It was nice catching up with you both,” Larry said.
“Okay, have a nice day Larry,” Mia said.
“Bye Larry,” Dukee said.
Larry waved goodbye and hopped down off the ledge by the window. Dukee and Mia watched as Larry crept across the grass to the neighbor's yard. When he disappeared under the neighbor's car, Mia turned and looked at Dukee.
“He sure is a nice lizard,” Mia said.
“Yes, he is… He takes time out of his day just to come and see us,” Dukee scratched his right ear.
Mia backed up out of the tunnel and hopped off the kitty tower and onto her table. She walked over to her food dish and nibbled on her food.
“What’s the matter, all this talk about bugs makes you hungry?” Dukee giggled.
“Ha ha, very funny,” Mia turned her head and looked back at Dukee.
