Mia wanted to play but also wanted Mom to play with the laser light in the hallway with her. Mia loves to jump at the red dot when it’s shined on the wall. And boy can Mia jump high, about four feet high that is.
I’m going to get that red dot and make it disappear, Mia thought.
Dukee walked out of his bedroom and sat down in the family room. He watched Mia as she jumped up at the red dot on the wall a few times. Mom moved the red dot up slowly, and down slowly. From one side of the wall, and across to the other side of the wall. Mia watched the red dot as it slowly moved toward her. She suddenly stood up on her back legs and hit the dot with her front paws as it moved in front of her.
When Mom moved the dot down to the floor, Mia looked down, chased after it, and stepped on it. I got it, Mia thought. She walked out of the hallway to the front of the house and lay down. Mom knew that Mia was done, at least for now. Mom sat down in her recliner while Mia rested. Dukee walked down the hallway and lay down about a foot and a half away from Mia. When Dukee’s back foot touched Mia’s back foot she kicked at it.
“Hey, watch your feet,” she whispered.
Dukee snickered and pulled his leg close to him. The two of them lay there quietly for about two minutes when Dukee wanted to play. He looked at Mia, kicked her foot, and jumped up and ran. As Dukee’s feet got a grip on the floor he ran into the family room and up onto the chaise lounge chair. He looked back and saw Mia sitting where he left her. She shook her head at him and laid back down. Dukee hopped down off the chair and quietly walked into the kitchen. He crept past the refrigerator and into the dining room. He peeked under the table at Mia and saw that she was facing her Mom.
As quietly as he could, Dukee walked past the bench and up next to the motor scooter. Just as he was going to sneak up behind Mia, the tip of his tail hit a plastic bag that was hanging down from the handle of the motor scooter. Mia rolled over and saw Dukee. He stopped when Mia saw him, and then ran and jumped up onto the side table by the leather sofa. Mia jumped up and ran around the other end of the leather sofa and looked up at Dukee. Dukee walked to the end of the table and snickered at Mia.
Because Mom was sitting in the front living room with them, they knew that they couldn’t say anything. So, Dukee watched as Mia crawled into her tent and lay down. Then he hopped down onto Mia’s litter box cabinet and walked over to the kitty tower. He stood up and reached for the scratching post. After he scratched his front claws on the post, he climbed all the way up to the top of the kitty tower. Mia giggled while she watched Dukee pull his heavy backside all the way up. Dukee looked down at Mia and stuck his tongue out at her.
When Dukee turned back around, a squirrel in the tree caught his eye. He watched as the squirrel munched on an acorn. Mia laid her head down on her left paw and watched Dukee as he sat there looking out the window. It was time to just rest and enjoy what was left of the afternoon.
