Mia and Dukee were sitting near the barn in the family room and listening Mia’s Mom clunk a bowl around in the kitchen sink.
“Mom has been making a lot of noise in the kitchen the last couple of days,” Mia looked at Dukee.
“Well, it’s that time of year again,” Dukee said.
“What do you mean?” Mia itched her neck.
“It’s Christmas time. Don’t you remember last year when her and Auntie spent a lot of time in there making cookies and stuff?” Dukee looked at her.
“Oh yeah, I guess so. Well, you’re older than me so you probably have seen Auntie do that before, right?
“Well, she did cooking and some baking where we used to live but not so much of the fancy baking that your Mom does,” Dukee said.
“Oh. Well, I do think that it’s nice to see Mom and Auntie laughing together during whatever their do in there,” Mia said.
“Yes it is. So, we have to stay out of their way so they can have fun and get stuff done,” Dukee walked over to the sofa and jumped up.
Mia watched him as he walked across the end table and stepped onto the wingback chair.
“See, I’m going to stay out of their way and take a nap,” Dukee laid down.
Mia walked toward the front living room and stopped at the kitchen doorway. She looked into the kitchen and saw her Mom doing something with a big green glob. I hope that’s edible, Mia thought. She continued into the living room and jumped up onto the kitty tower. She laid down in the cube part but faced the front window. I guess I’ll just watch for anything that comes a long, Mia thought.
So, that’s what she did. She watched the squirrels run in and out of the yard, the birds that would briefly land in the tree, and any lizards that would scurry along the porch screen or ground. It was a busy day for Mom and Auntie, but a quiet one for Mia and Dukee.
