It was around 12:40 in the afternoon when Mom and Auntie arrived home from the grocery store. Dukee was lying up above the main walkway and hall on the shelf. Mia was sitting on her kitty tower watching out the living room window. When Auntie and Mom started to get out of the car Dukee hopped down onto the cupboard top. He then jumped down to the bar counter, and down onto the floor. He ran to the front door and leaped up onto the side table and waited.
Mia jumped down from the kitty tower and stepped up onto the bottom shelf of the side table. She walked to the end, sat down, and watched out the narrow window by the door. Auntie usually carries her groceries through the garage because she uses that fridge and freezer. Mom uses the front door to bring her groceries in. Mom unlocked and opened the door. She saw Dukee and Mia sitting there so she cautiously walked in. We don’t need any kitties sneaking out the door.
Mom said hi to Mia and Dukee, put her bags down, and turned to go back out the door. But this time, with Dukee sitting so close to the door, he reached out and grabbed the back of Mom’s shirt. Ah huh, I got you, Dukee thought. That made Mom stop quickly and laugh. Dukee let go, so she went back out the door and told Auntie.
“What did you do?” Mia looked up at Dukee.
“I grabbed your mom’s shirt so that she couldn’t leave again. I know how much you missed her last week,” Dukee said.
“I appreciate that but don’t do that again,” Mia said.
“Okay… I was just trying to help,” Dukee jumped down and trotted toward the dining area.
Mia waited and watched as Mom closed the car door and carried the rest of her groceries to the front door. Mia shook her body with excitement seeing that Mom was home to stay. After Mom walked in and put the last of her groceries down, she gave Mia the attention that she wanted. I’m so happy that you are home Mom, Mia thought as she rubbed on her leg.
Dukee was waiting in the kitchen by the door that leads to the laundry room and the garage. Where is she, he thought. Just then, as Auntie opened the door Dukee’s excitement overwhelmed him. He ran into the family room, stopped, and ran back into the kitchen through the other doorway. Dukee ran and jumped up onto the counter so fast that he stumbled over the sink and knocked over the Dawn dish soap bottles.
For the fear of his safety, Auntie yelled for him to slow down. Dukee did only for a moment and then jumped up onto the bar counter and up onto the top of the cupboards. He trotted up onto the top of the wall and over to the shelf above the walkway. Auntie again told him to settle down, while Mia looked up and shook her head at him. Dukee laid down up there until Auntie carried a couple of bags into their bedroom. He then jumped down his usual way and trotted into his bedroom.
Auntie sat down on her chair for a minute and Dukee sat and looked at her. Auntie told him that he has to be careful when running around like that. She said that she doesn’t want him to get hurt. He walked up and rubbed his head on her hand. I’m sorry, he thought. Auntie asked him if he wanted his lunch now and got up. Dukee hopped up onto the stool and listened as the lid of the can of cat food was pulled off. He sniffed the air and smelled the glorious aroma of fish and shrimp, (that smell is only glorious to a cat). Auntie scooped some into a clean dish and set it down in its usual spot. Dukee hopped down and enjoyed his lunch.
Mia was in the living room with Mom and enjoyed the neck scratches that she was getting. Then while Mom finished putting her things away, Mia plopped down on the floor by her pink mouse. She rolled over onto her back and snatched the mouse up with her claws. She held it up to her face with both paws and inhaled the now faint smell of catnip. You still smell good mouse, Mia thought as she rolled around. Mom heard Mia clunk her head on the floor and looked. Mom asked her if she was being cutesy. Mia looked at Mom, rolled over again, and thought, of course, I am.
