It was early morning before the sun was even awake, and Dukee was up walking around. He couldn’t sleep anymore so he quietly walked out to the front living room. He went to the window in the dining area first and because the cars are parked in the driveway there, part of his view was blocked. He sat there a few minutes, hopped down, and moved to the living room window.
Dukee jumped up onto the blanket that lay on top of the litter box cabinet and looked out the window. He glanced from side to side and didn’t see any movement outside. Because it was still dark and everyone was still sleeping, he decided to lay down right there. So he did a partial turn and plopped down. I guess I am still tired, he thought as he yawned. Before you knew it he was sound asleep.
He wasn’t asleep very long when he heard a rather loud rustling and squawking sound. Dukee quickly turned and peered out the window, It had just started to turn daylight outside. As he looked toward the cars and across the street, he saw what looked like a very large cat with a short tail. It was climbing a tall pine tree and a very large bird was fluttering by it and squawking at it.
Dukee was so focused on the activity outside that he didn’t hear Mia walk into the room.
“What’s going on out there?” Mia jumped up onto the kitty tower by the window.
“Oh my goodness you scared me,” Dukee jumped.
“Hey, I’ve seen that cat before,” Mia peered out the window.
“You have? I have never seen a cat that big before,” Dukee said
“Yeah, I think I heard Mom call it a bobcat,” Mia said.
The two of them watched as the big bird would dart at the cat, trying to make it get down. The bobcat finally took the hint and climbed back down the tree. The big bird which is called a vulture flew to a higher branch in the tree and watched as the bobcat left.
“Wow that was pretty cool,” Dukee looked at Mia.
“Yeah I’ve only seen that cat one other time and it was doing almost the same thing,” Mia said.
“Well, what do you think it was trying to do?” Dukee asked.
“It was probably looking for something to eat,” Mia licked the top of her paw.
“Up a tree?” Dukee asked.
“Well I don’t know, maybe,” Mia said.
Just then, Mom had shuffled into the kitchen to get Mia her breakfast.
“Ooo breakfast time,” Mia hopped down.
Dukee sat there as Mom carried a little container into the living room and scooped some food into Mia's empty dish. Mom could barely move her hand out of the way before Mia pushed her head into the dish. Mom shuffled back to the kitchen and put the food into the refrigerator.
“Yum yum yum,” Mia gobbled her food.
“You are such a pig for a little girl,” Dukee said as he watched her.
“I can’t help it, it’s so tasty,” she looked at Dukee and licked her lips.
