The squirrel that Dukee and Mia were watching all of a sudden scurried fast up the tree. They both noticed why someone with a dog was walking in the street. As they watched the person with the dog walk past, Dukee quickly looked up at the ceiling.
What was that? He thought. Dukee got up and hopped down from the blanket.
Mia got up and followed Dukee down the hall. Dukee stopped in the family room and continued to look at the ceiling.
“Did you hear that?” Dukee stared up.
“Yes, it’s just that squirrel,” Mia said.
“It’s up there?” Dukee asked.
“Yeah, sometimes it runs across to get to the back yard,” Mia explained.
Dukee trotted over to the sliding porch door and looked out. “I don’t see it.”
Mia walked over to Dukee. “It probably got down another way.”
The two of them watched out the door and waited for the squirrel but it didn’t show. Dukee meowed, hoping that Auntie would come and open the door but she didn’t. A few minutes went by and still no squirrel.
“I’m going to my room,” Mia said.
Dukee watched for a few minutes more and walked towards the kitchen. While he walked and looked up at the ceiling, he decided to go up to the landing above the pantry closet. He jumped up onto the counter by the stove, then onto the top of the refrigerator, and up onto the ledge of the wall. He meowed loudly a couple of times and walked across the landing over to the ledge that overlooked the front living room.
He meowed a couple more times which made Auntie look up at him, and told him that he was being silly. Since he was so high up, he was able to look out both front windows at the same time. This is pretty cool up here, Dukee thought.
Mia trotted out of her bedroom with Lamb-chop in her mouth and went into the front living room by Mom and Auntie. She put Lamb-chop down by Mom’s feet and looked up towards Dukee. She shook her head at him as if to say, you’re silly for being up there. Dukee just laid up there for a while and watched everything.
