It was around midnight and Dukee was sitting on the far end of the side table in the front living room. He was scanning the window for any frogs that might be lurking around. Even though he didn’t see any frogs on the window, he heard someone walk into the front living room.
“Any frogs out there?” Mia jumped up onto the kitty tower.
“Nope, I don’t see any from here,” Dukee looked at Mia.
Mia walked onto the window sill and looked down at the outside of the window. Then she looked at the side and up towards the top, “nope, I guess not. There isn’t any on my bedroom window either.”
“Well, maybe they ate enough bugs for the night,” Dukee said.
Mia sat there on the window sill and stared out the window. She blinked her eyes a couple of times trying to see if she sees who she think she is seeing. Dukee sat there looking out the window when Mia adjusted her footing and fluffed her tail.
“Guess who’s walking over here?” Mia said.
Dukee moved his head around trying to see, and then hopped down onto the blanket to get closer, “Who?”
Just then Dukee saw who it was as he stepped into the flower bed and stood up at the window.
“Good evening my pretty Mia and Mr. Dukee. How have you been?” Rafael leaned close to the window.
“Hi Rafael,” Dukee waved.
“Hi Rafael, I’m doing good. What have you been up to?” Mia licked the long fur on her chest.
“I’ve been good, and have been trying to stay out of trouble but trouble sometimes finds me,” Rafael said.
Mia’s ears perked up and listened. Dukee moved a little closer to the window sill and stood there listening
“The other night I was walking through the woods behind my house. And I was minding my own business too,” Rafael moved like he was walking. “I walked past this large tree, around a pile of brush, and all of a sudden, I froze in my tracks.”
Dukee’s eyes got bigger as he listened. Mia laid her ears down but listened intently.
“Remember that bobcat that I told you about? He was there, staring right at me,” Rafael stood and stared at Mia.
“Oh no, what did you do?” Mia asked.
“Well, we stared at each other for about a minute or two, and then he just turned and walked the other way. I was so relieved,” Rafael held his paw up to his chest.
“Wow, that had to have been scary,” Dukee sat down on the blanket.
“Oh my goodness, I would have been scared to death,” Mia shook her whole body.
Rafael lifted his front right paw and extended his claws, “I have to admit, I was nervous, but I would have put up a fight if he wanted to come at me.”
“I don’t know if I could do that,” Mia looked at Rafael.
“It’s put up a fight or die, right Rafael?” Dukee said.
“Yes, pretty much. If you want live, and you are ever in a situation like that you must be ready to fight. I could have easily turned and walked away but because I am smaller than the bobcat. I feared that he would attack me from behind so I stood my ground,” Rafael looked at Mia.
“Well, I’m just happy that you are still here and didn’t have to fight that bobcat,” Mia licked the top of her left paw.
“To be honest, I am too,” Rafael said.
“Yeah, that bobcat probably realized that you weren’t going to back down and didn’t feel like fighting you,” Dukee looked at Rafael.
“Yes, you are probably right. I’m sure that if you had to fight him you would, wouldn’t you?” Rafael looked at Dukee.
“Yes, I probably would,” Dukee lifted his front left paw and extended his claws.
“Okay boys, I get the idea,” Mia said.
“Well, I’m going to go get something to eat. It was good to see you two again,” Rafael said.
“Yes, it was nice to see you in one piece,” Mia said.
“Yeah, and stay safe out there,” Dukee said.
Rafael nodded and went down on all fours. Dukee and Mia watched while Rafael hopped out of the flower bed and trotted across the neighbor’s front yard.
“Would you really fight a bobcat if you had to?” Mia asked Dukee.
“If I had no other choice I would,” Dukee turned and hopped down onto the floor.
Mia turned and walked over to her food dish, “I guess if I had to, I would try my best.”
Dukee looked back at Mia, “that’s all you have to do, is do your best at everything.”
Mia thought about that as she nibbled on her food. Dukee walked down the hallway and went into his bedroom.
