Carrie
It was early morning and Dukee was roaming the house. He looked out the window by the front door and saw a lizard. It didn’t appear to be Larry the lizard though. Dukee turned and walked around the dining table and through the kitchen. In the family room, he stopped by the sliding glass door and looked outside. He sat down and watched the birds fly from tree to tree.
Mia was lying on the rug on the floor when she heard the birds outside. She slowly peeked out the window and then jumped up onto the window sill. She saw the red male cardinal flying above the one bush. She looked around and wondered if that was Carrie's husband. Just as Mia was looking, Carrie flew down and landed on the ledge of the window.
“Hi, Mia.”
“Hi, Carrie. I was wondering if you were out there. Is that your husband?” Mia pointed.
“Yes, that’s Harold. He thinks he’s showing off to the other birds but I honestly don’t think they care,” Carrie giggled.
“So have you seen anything new?” Mia asked.
“Well, I think a new family moved in a couple of streets over. They have a very rambunctious dog in their backyard. Harold and I thankfully were flying high enough. The dog saw us and started jumping up and down trying to get us as we flew over,” Carrie motioned with her wings the dog jumping.
“Were you scared?” Mia asked.
“I was startled at first but realized that it couldn’t get us,” Carrie looked at Mia.
“That dog over there is pretty big, so you might want to be careful,” Mia pointed next door.
“Yes, I have seen that one, It seems to be okay though,” Carrie said.
Carrie looked at Mia, “so what have you been doing since our last chat?”
“Just my usual stuff, liking playing with my toys and Mom,” Mia licked her paw.
“Well, what is your favorite toy that you play with?” Carrie asked.
“My Lamb-chop is my favorite, but I have a lot of fun with this straw handle thingy. Mom cut it off a bag that I liked so I snuck it from her,” Mia giggled.
“Do you play with Dukee?” Carrie asked.
“Well… Sometimes we chase each other, but otherwise, we only talk to each other. I think sometimes he wants to play but I’m not sure how rough he would be,” Mia said.
“That’s understandable, but you won’t know unless you try,” Carrie spread her wing out.
“That’s true… Do you have any children Carrie?” Mia asked.
“Oh yes, we have two and they are grown up now,” Carrie looked at Harold as he sat on the fence.
“Do you get to see them?” Mia asked.
“Yes, every so often they stop by, or we fly to their homes,” Carrie said.
“That’s nice… I don’t know my real mom, just my human mom. I don’t remember a lot from when I was little,” Mia said.
“Well, it seems like your human mom is treating you really well,” Carrie said.
“Yes she does, and I probably don’t give her enough credit, which I should,” Mia said.
“Yes, you must love the mom that you have because you could be worse off… Well, I need to get going Mia, Harold is getting antsy,” Carrie said.
“Okay, thank you for stopping by, it was nice talking to you,” Mia said.
“Anytime my dear Mia. You take care now,” Carrie flew up and over to Harold.
Mia watched as Carrie and Harold flew up and over the house. She’s such a nice bird, Mia thought. She hopped down from the window sill and licked her Lamb-chop toy that was sitting there. Mia softly meowed at it and tapped it. You will be with me forever, Mia thought as she tapped the toy again.
