It was around 6 am and Mia jumped from the window sill to her and Mom’s bed. Mom was sleeping on that side of the bed so Mia had to jump over Mom’s legs. Because of the sudden bounce that Mia did on the bed, she woke Mom up. Mom looked at Mia and then rolled over to her side. Mia looked at Mom and hoped that she would get up, but she didn’t. I want my breakfast, Mia thought. So, Mia jumped up and down two more times, but Mom didn’t budge.
Just then, Mia heard Dukee meowing out in the family room. So, she hopped down off the bed and peeked out past the bedroom door. Dukee was playing with his mouse and string. Mia walked out into the family room and crept up alongside the cardboard barn. As Dukee sat there and moved the string with his paw, he would flick the end of his tail. Mia was about two feet away from Dukee’s flicking tail, and she watched it.
Mia laid low to the floor getting ready to pounce when Dukee stood up and turned around.
Dukee saw Mia there, “What do you think you're doing?”
“Um, nothing. I’m just lying here cleaning my paw,” Mia licked the top of her paw.
“Sure you are. You were going to hit my tail, weren’t you?” Dukee sat down.
“Hit your tail? Now, why would I do that?” Mia giggled.
“I know that’s what you were going to do because you’ve done it before,” Dukee walked away.
Dukee walked around the sofa and walked up to the sliding glass door. He stood there looking out it when Mia walked up next to him. The backyard was just starting to get active with birds. Two little black and white birds fluttered above the bush on the other side of the fence. A red cardinal swooped down and landed on the grass.
“I wonder if that’s Harold?” Mia watched the cardinal.
“I don’t see Carrie anywhere if it is,” Dukee looked around.
“Oh, wait,” Mia’s ears perked up.
“What, do you see Carrie?” Dukee looked at Mia.
“No, I think that I hear Mom getting up. That means breakfast,” Mia quickly ran around Dukee and then around the chaise lounge chair.
“Okay, I see where her mind is at,” Dukee sat and watched the birds.
Mom shuffled into the bathroom and Mia waited for her outside of the door. When Mom was done and washed her hands, Mia pushed the door open. Come on Mom, Mia thought. Mom walked out of the bathroom and headed toward the kitchen. Mia ran ahead and was there anxiously waiting. Mom opened up a new food package and scooped some into the dish that was on the island. She then put the package with the remaining food into the refrigerator.
Mia watched as Mom picked up her dish. When Mom started to walk towards the bedroom with it, Mia ran into the bedroom ahead of her. Dukee watched as Mia ran ahead of Mom. Boy, you would think that she was starving to death, he thought. Dukee sniffed the air and smelled the gravy of Mia’s food. The smell made him a little hungry so he decided to go to his room to eat.
Dukee walked up to his bowl and nibbled on a few kernels of food. Dukee heard Auntie move around on the bed and turned to see if she was getting up. I could really go for my breakfast now, he thought. Auntie didn’t get up so Dukee jumped up onto the desk which is about three feet away from the head of the bed. He sat there hoping that she would see him staring at her. Auntie opened her eyes briefly and looked at Dukee. Then she rolled over to look at the time on her cell phone.
Auntie looked at Dukee and told him that it was too early yet. After all, it was only 6:30. Auntie closed her eyes and fell back to sleep. Dukee hopped down onto the chair and then up onto the bed. He understood that Auntie wasn’t going to get up yet so he laid down at the foot of the bed. Some mornings Dukee is more persistent but not this morning.
