It was almost 7 am and Dukee was sitting on the blanket on top of Mia’s Litter box cabinet. He was watching two squirrels chasing each other around the tree in the front yard. Mia finished eating her breakfast in her bedroom and then decided that she needed a drink of water. Quietly she walked out of her bedroom and into the family room. Everything in the house was still pretty quiet as Mia trotted to the front of the house.
When Mia entered the front living room and walked around the leather sofa, she was surprised to see Dukee sitting by the window.
“Well, you are up early this morning,” Mia jumped up onto the coffee table to get a drink.
“Yes, I feel that it’s going to be a beautiful day and wanted to enjoy every minute of it,” Dukee looked toward Mia as she drank from her water bowl.
Mia licked the water droplets from around her mouth while she walked over to the window sill.
“I feel like that some days too and it makes me just want to hop around and play,” Mia wiped her face with her right front paw.
“You must have had one of those days yesterday then the way you were running back and forth,” Dukee said.
Mia giggled, “oh yeah, I did. I had a lot of energy yesterday when Mom finally got up.”
“Yes, I could tell. You didn’t even notice me sitting on the other side of the barn when you ran through,” Dukee looked at Mia.
“Wait, you were in the family room watching me?” Mia asked.
“I was in there sitting by the sofa waiting for Auntie to let me outside, and you ran past. I wasn’t watching you on purpose,” Dukee licked his left paw.
“Oh… Yeah, I was focused straight ahead when I ran out of my room. I didn’t even think that you would be up and out,” Mia looked out the window.
“Yes, I gathered that,” Dukee snickered.
While Dukee and Mia were looking out the window, they saw two large grey birds casually walking down the street.
“Wow, look at the size of those birds,” Mia said.
“Yeah, those are big aren’t they,” Dukee watched as the Sand Hill Cranes slowly walked and looked around.
“You hadn’t seen those before where you used to live?” Mia asked.
“No, not that big,” Dukee stared out the window.
One of the birds stopped and flapped it’s large wings. The other bird squawked at it and continued to walk in front of the house. A car from up the street drove up and stopped at the stop sign. It sat there and waited for the two birds to move out of the way.
“Look at that, even the car has to wait for a bird that size to move,” Mia said.
“Well, I wouldn’t even attempt to chase a bird that size,” Dukee shook his head.
“Yeah, me neither,” Mia said.
The Sand Hill Cranes gradually walked past the house and down the street. The car at the stop sign then drove off in the direction it was headed. Mia and Dukee continued looking out the window just in case the two birds came back.
“I don’t think that they are coming back this way,” Dukee stretched his neck to see down the street.
Mia waited a few more minutes and then turned around and walked back over to her water bowl. Dukee stood up and arched his back for a good stretch. Auntie walked down the hallway and up to the narrow window by the front door and looked out. Dukee meowed and jumped up onto the side table to see what Auntie was doing. Mia looked back but then went back to drinking her water. Auntie petted Dukee as he stood on the table by her. When she turned to leave the room, Dukee hopped down and followed her. Mia finished drinking her water and then hopped up into the tunnel part of the kitty tower.
“I’m going to wait and see if those big birds come back,” Mia said.
