Mom walked out of the bedroom, and Mia followed her to the front living room. Dukee hopped up onto the chaise lounge chair, and then up onto the back of it. That’s been his alone time spot lately since the chair got moved by the wall.
Mom sat down in her reclining chair and Mia played with her pink mouse. She batted it a couple of times with her paw and laid down by it. She rolled around and picked it up with her paws. She held it close to her face and rolled around some more. Mia liked the fuzzy pink catnip-scented mouse that Auntie gave her. She rolled over to her side for a minute and then got up.
She walked over to the kitty tower and hopped up onto it. She climbed up into the tunnel part and laid down. She watched as the neighbor across the street was mowing his lawn. Then she saw two small birds land in the tree in our front yard. The birds were hopping from branch to branch and chirping.
While Mia was watching the birds, something else caught her eye. A tiny little bug crawling on the outside screen. Hardly big enough to see, but she saw it. Mia climbed down from the tunnel and crept up to the window. Bang! she hit the window with her paw. Of course, the bug didn’t pay any attention and kept crawling. Mia pawed at the window softly and realized that she couldn’t get it.
She watched it until it crawled out of sight, and she turned around. Darn window… I could have gotten that bug too, she thought. Mia hopped down onto the floor and walked over by Mom. She stretched and scratched on Mom’s chair, even though she knows she gets yelled at. And trotted quickly into the hall.
By this time Dukee was sitting at the end of the hall in the family room looking at Mia. She casually walked over to Dukee and sat down.
“What are you doing?” Mia asked.
“Nothing, just sitting here,” Dukee said. “What was the noise I just heard?”
“Oh, that was me… I was making sure that a bug on the outside of the window knows who’s boss around here,” Mia licked the top of her paw.
“Yeah, you do think that don’t you?” Dukee stood up.
“Well, I’m the boss of some things around here… like my toys, and my food. And Mom sometimes lets me boss her around,” Mia said.
Dukee walked past Mia to go into the front living room. He just let her talk as she followed him. He walked up to the narrow window by the front door and looked out. Mia walked over to the other narrow window and looked out. There happened to be a large lizard on the outside of the screen by the front porch. Dukee meowed and waged his tail.
“You want to get that lizard don’t you?” Mia whispered.
“I will one of these times,” He whispered back.
“You can’t go out on that porch,” Mia said.
“I can still try,” Dukee whispered.
Mia got bored and walked on the lower shelf of the side table, and into her play area. She decided that she was going to lay down for a while. Dukee watched the lizard for a few more minutes until he heard Auntie doing something. So he walked back down the hall and into his room.
