Mom and Auntie have been gone for more than a couple of hours. Mia was lying in the tunnel part of the kitty tower looking out the window and waiting. Dukee casually walked up to the narrow window by the front door and looked out. The only thing that Dukee saw was a lizard on the screen outside of the porch. Dukee jumped up onto the side table by the reclining sofa and walked to the end of it.
“I wonder where my mom went, she’s been gone for a long time now,” Mia looked at Dukee.
“Well, she’s with Auntie so I wouldn’t worry too much about it. They’ll be home soon, you’ll see,” Dukee looked at Mia.
Mia looked back out the window and watched as a couple of people were walking their dog in front of the house. Dukee noticed a squirrel running along the wire and watched it as it hopped into the tree in the front yard. The dog also saw the squirrel and stopped to bark at it. The people tugged on the leash to get the dog moving again.
“I don’t think that I would like to have that thing on me,” Mia watched the dog.
“What thing?” Dukee asked.
“That thing that those people pulled the dog with,” Mia said.
“Oh, you mean a leash. A leash is so the dog won’t run away,” Dukee said.
“Well, I wouldn’t like that. I don’t like to be forced to do something that I don’t want to do,” Mia licked the top of her paw.
“A leash also protects the dog from getting hurt or hurting someone else. But I have to be honest, that when Auntie put a harness on me with a leash I didn’t like how it felt,” Dukee looked at Mia.
“Why did she put one on you? You’re not a dog,” Mia asked.
“I think that she wanted to see how I would react to it, but I wiggled my way out of it,” Dukee wiggled his body.
Mia giggled as she watched Dukee wiggle his whole body from his head to his tail. Dukee knew that his goofiness would cheer Mia up at least for a little while.
“So because you wiggled out of the harness, did Auntie try to put it on you again?” Mia backed up out of the tunnel.
“No, I think that because I was able to get out of it once, she figured I would probably be able to do it again,” Dukee watched Mia as she hopped down to the floor.
Mia went inside the litter box cabinet to go to the bathroom. Dukee sat on the side table and looked out the window while Mia was busy. When Dukee heard Mia scratching around in the litter he figured she was done. Mia shook her paws and stepped out of the litter box cabinet.
“Do you have a light inside of there?” Dukee looked down at Mia.
“Yes, why?” Mia looked up.
“Oh, I was just wondering. There’s a light inside of mine too. Where I lived before, we didn’t go into a cabinet, we just stepped into the box,” Dukee hopped down on top of Mia’s litter box cabinet.
Dukee walked over to the kitty tower and stepped up onto it. Mia laid down on the rug in front of the reclining sofa and watched him. Dukee reached up and clawed on the scratch post for about a minute before he stopped and turned around.
“So do you like it?” Mia looked up at Dukee.
“Like what?” Dukee asked.
“Your litter box cabinet,” Mia said.
“Oh, yeah, I guess it’s okay. I’m just not sure why Auntie decided to get one when we moved here,” Dukee licked the bottom of his front left paw.
“Maybe you’re messy and she thought mine was a good idea,” Mia rolled over onto her right side.
“Well, I guess I do kick the sand out of the box a lot,” Dukee giggled.
“I thought so,” Mia stretched her front paws out.
Dukee stuck his tongue out at Mia and jumped down about two feet away from her. Dukee knew that Mia might chase him when he hit the floor so he ran into the hallway. Mia only sat up quickly and didn’t run after him. Dukee stopped and looked back toward the front living room, but Mia didn’t follow. Hmm, okay, he thought and walked into the family room.
Mia jumped up onto the coffee table where her food dish is and munched on some of the dry kernels. Dukee laid down on the family room floor and put his paw on his blue mouse. I’m sure Auntie and Mom will be home soon so I can have my canned lunch, Dukee thought while facing the front of the house.
