Mia and Dukee were sitting by the back patio sliding glass doors and were looking out. It wasn’t dark yet, but it would be soon. Just beyond the fence in the backyard are some pine trees, palm trees, and other plant life. Beyond that is a canal with some water in it. So many times, different wildlife would go down into the canal to drink from it.
“Do you see anything?” Mia asked while she moved her head up and down, and side to side.
“No… Wait, what’s that?” Dukee looked straight.
“What, what is it?” Mia moved closer to see.
“Oh, never mind, it’s just a crow that went down there,” Dukee said.
Oh, I forgot to tell you, Mom and I saw some deer real early the other morning,” Mia said while still looking out the door.
“Really, that’s cool… Whereat?” Dukee looked at Mia.
“They were back there, in the neighbors' yard again,” Mia pointed with her paw.
“And another time we saw a furry rabbit in our back yard, and that big rat-looking thing next door,” Mia licked her paw.
“Do you two ever sleep?” Dukee asked.
“Yeah, but sometimes Mom has to get up for some reason, and then we see them,” Mia said.
“Well, you do have a better view too, out your window,” Dukee said.
“Yeah, that’s true,” Mia licked her paw again.
“Hey, look a lizard,” Dukee said.
“Where?” Mia looked.
“It’s on the screen,” Dukee said.
“Oh, that’s outside, we can’t get it,” Mia looked.
“Well, it’s getting dark outside now,” Mia turned and walked toward the chair.
Dukee turned and walked in the other direction, around the chaise, and walked alongside the cardboard barn. He sat down by it and Mia ducked under the chair and laid down.
“So, what do you want to do now?” Dukee asked.
“Since you have been around longer than me, have you ever captured a bird?” Mia looked at Dukee.
“Captured a bird? No, but I’ve been close to one,” Dukee said.
“Where I used to live, someone came in the house with a bird on his shoulder,” Dukee licked his shoulder.
“Really, in the house?” Mia’s eyes widened.
“Yep, it was a pretty big bird too, and it was blue and yellow… But they left after a few minutes,” Dukee said.
“Wow, I bet that was cool… Did you want to chase it?” Mia asked.
“No, not really… Sometimes it’s just nice to look and not touch.” Dukee said.

I wish ours would just look and not touch. We get little lizzards in the house all the time and it is a chore to rescue them from these girls.
