Mia was in her bedroom sitting on the marble window sill, and looking out the window. She saw something move in one of the trees and watched. Just then a lizard crept around the corner of the window and hopped onto the screen. Even though it startled Mia, she pounced at the window, which made a loud thump, and the lizard scurried to the side. This startled Mom while she was sitting on the bed. But Mia continued to look for the lizard.
Dukee was in his bedroom searching for a toy in his toy box. He pulled out one of his favorites and picked it up with his mouth. He carried it out into the family room and meowed loudly. I’m not sure why he meows loudly with a toy in his mouth, but I take the time to acknowledge him when he does.
It was the blue stuffed Peep toy this time, and he dropped it on the floor. He meowed once more as if he said he caught his prey. He tapped it a couple of times with his paw and walked away. Dukee walked over to the glass sliding door and meowed. I had a feeling that he wanted out on the porch, so I got up and let him out.
The temperature was comfortably warm and Dukee enjoyed it. By this time of the day the sun had started to shine on the screen porch. So he found a nice sun patch and laid down. He rolled around from side to side and soaked up the warmth of the sun. All of a sudden he heard a strange sound in the backyard and jumped up.
Dukee carefully peeked out the screen and saw a big black bird known as a vulture. It had landed on the grass and hopped around. It seemed like it was looking for something. Dukee sat on his back feet with his front paws on the ledge by the screen and watched it.
Mia was in her room still by the window and saw it too. They both watched as this bird slowly hopped around the grass. Just then another vulture landed in the yard. The first vulture pecked at the new vulture as if it was telling it to leave. But that one just hopped away. The bird continued to look around, and hop around, but didn’t seem to find what it was looking for. So it gave up and flew up into the tree.
The other vulture also flew up but flew farther away. Just then a little grey mouse darted out from some tall grass by the fence. It ran toward the neighbor’s yard without the vulture even knowing it. Mia saw the mouse run and looked up at the vulture in the tree. She was happy that the big bird didn’t get the little mouse.
Dukee decided that he was ready to go back inside the house and meowed at the door. A couple of minutes went by and Auntie walked into the family room to let Dukee back in. Mia rushed out of her bedroom and laid down on the floor alongside the chaise lounge chair. Dukee walked past the chair and Mia whispered to him.
“Did you see that?” Mia whispered.
“You mean the two birds?” Dukee asked.
“Yeah, and the little mouse that got away,” Mia said.
“Is that what they were doing? I didn’t see the mouse,” Dukee said.
“Yeah, it was hiding, and then it ran to the neighbor’s yard when the birds flew up,” Mia looked at Dukee.
“Oh, I missed that part,” Dukee said.
“Yeah, I watched it from my window,” Mia said.
