It was around eight o’clock in the morning and Dukee was sitting about a foot away from the cardboard barn. Mia was walking down the hallway and into the family room when suddenly a loud noise started. Mia ran into the cardboard barn and crouched down.
“What is that?” Mia yelled out.
Looking around with perked ears Dukee said, “I don’t know.”
Just then, Auntie rushed out of her bedroom with a broom and reached up to the ceiling with it. She silenced the loud screeching noise. Auntie looked at Dukee and then Mia and told them it was alright.
Dukee shook his head and peeked into the barn, “are you okay?”
Mia stepped out and looked up at the ceiling, ”whatever that thing is, it sure makes a loud noise.”
“Yes it does,” Dukee walked around to the front of the barn.
Mia cautiously trotted into her bedroom and jumped up on the bed by her Mom. Mom asked her if that hurt her ears, but told her that everything is okay now. Mia let Mom give her some neck scratches before she walked down to the end of the bed and onto the scratchpad. Mom got up and walked around to the other side of the bed. Mia knew that it was treat time and sat there looking pretty.
Still, in the family room, Dukee laid down on the sheets of paper and played with his new squeaky mouse. He rolled over onto his side with his mouse in between his paws and looked up at the thing attached to the ceiling. I’m sure that whatever that thing is for, the loud sound it makes must mean something, Dukee thought. Dukee laid there and rubbed the mouse on his face and then gnawed on it. Mia walked out of her bedroom and then over to where Dukee was.
“What are you doing, that’s not a catnip mouse,” Mia asked Dukee while he held the mouse by his nose.
“I know, but it’s soft. I like soft and fuzzy things,” Dukee said.
Mia giggled and started to walk away when Dukee reached out and touched the tip of Mia’s tail.
Mia spun around and swatted at Dukee’s paw, “don’t touch!”
Dukee sat up quickly and Mia ran down the hallway and into the front living room. She jumped up onto the kitty tower and watched for Dukee. About two minutes passed before Dukee walked into the living room. This time he jumped up onto the arm of the leather reclining sofa and then stepped down onto the seat. Mia watched him as he looked at her and then laid down.
Mia stepped off of the kitty tower and walked across the blanket that lay on top of the litter box cabinet. She thought that Dukee would jump up onto the side table like he usually does but he didn’t. So she jumped up onto the side table, sniffed the plastic pumpkins, and looked at Dukee. Dukee yawned and stretched his right front leg out.
“Are you going to take a nap?” Mia asked Dukee.
“No, not right now, why?” Dukee asked.
“Just asking. You look tired and you yawned,” Mia sat down.
“I am a little tired. I was up off and on during the night,” Dukee said.
“Well, I slept for a while when Mom came to bed last night, but then I got the munchies and got up,” Mia licked the fur on her shoulder.
“Yeah, I think I heard you playing with my papers,” Dukee said.
“Oh, yeah I stopped there briefly and tried to slip under one of them but it didn’t work,” Mia giggled. “Where did those come from anyways?”
“Auntie put them there when she got home the other day. The same day that she gave us the mice,” Dukee said.
“Oh, I didn’t know that you liked to play with papers,” Mia looked at Dukee.
“Oh, well I do, but I guess when I make too much of a mess with them Auntie throws them away,” Dukee licked his paw.
“Yes, I can understand that. Mom used to leave a bag of papers sitting around until one afternoon she came home and I had the papers spread out all over the floor,” Mia giggled.
“I bet she wasn’t too happy about that,” Dukee said.
“No, but I know she forgave me,” Mia said.
Dukee and Mia spent the next half an hour sharing funny stories that they each did that got them into trouble. Cats know just how much they can get away with, without getting yelled at for too long.

Is everything okay? Smoke alarms go off for a reason. We had one in the hallway outside our bedrooms but took it down because the bathroom was there too and the steam would set it off. Also took the one from the kitchen down because it would go off all the time when I was cooking.
