Mia was watching the birds out the front window when she saw something strange. It was crawling across the street and into the front yard. She stared out the window and flipped her tail a couple of times. Into the yard, it crawled nibbling on the grass. What is that, she thought. It had a hard-looking shell and four short legs as it inched little by little along the grass. Mia was seeing a tortoise for the first time.
She watched it as it munched and munched on the grass in the yard. The tortoise would walk a few steps, stop and munch some more. It carefully picked at the different areas of the grass and slowly made its way into the neighbor’s yard. Mia had to get down from the tunnel and get close to the window now to see it. She watched it as long as she could until it disappeared. What an interesting creature that was, she thought.
Mia hopped down and walked over to Mom’s chair. She stretched her arms upon Mom’s chair and Mom pets her on the head. Mia wanted to scratch on it but Mom stopped her. Mia trotted down the hallway, through the family room, and into her bedroom.
Auntie got up from the reclining sofa and went to check on Dukee. Just as she walked up to the door he hopped down from the chair. She let him inside and then she went back into the front living room. Dukee wanted to follow her but was stopped by Mia in the kitchen.
“I just saw a strange-looking creature,” Mia said to Dukee.
“Oh yeah, what did it look like?” Dukee asked.
“It was low to the ground and was wearing a hard-looking shell of some kind,” Mia sat down.
“Oh, it sounds like you saw a turtle or tortoise… Was it eating grass?” Dukee asked.
“Yes, it was,” Mia licked her leg.
“Yep, that’s what you saw…
“I saw many of those where I used to live… They would walk right by the screen porch. What did you think of it?” Dukee walked toward the front living room.
“I guess it was pretty cool,” Mia followed him. “But why do they need those hard shell looking things?”
“I don’t know, maybe it protects them,” Dukee said.
Dukee hopped up onto the side table and Mia trotted around the reclining sofa and jumped up onto the kitty tower. Dukee looked out the window and whispered to Mia.
“Which way did the tortoise go?” He asked.
“It went next door,” Mia looked that way.
The two of them sat there and looked out the front living room window. It’s been a while since Dukee saw a tortoise so he was hoping to see one again.
