Even though it was only fifty degrees outside, Dukee insisted on going out onto the back screened porch. As he stepped out onto the chilly cement he looked back at Auntie. She waited for a minute by the door to see if he wanted to stay out or come back in. Dukee looked back out the screen and saw two cardinals land on the branches of the bush.
“Carrie, Harold, is that you?” Dukee called out.
Harold stayed sitting on the bush while Carrie flew up and over to the drain pipe by the screen.
“Well, hi there Dukee, how have you been?” Carrie gripped the drain pipe with her claws.
“I’m doing great, thank you. Mia and I have been wondering how you and your family have been since the storm. Is everyone doing okay?” Dukee looked up at Carrie.
“Oh yes, everyone is just fine. We got back into town about a week ago. I’m sorry if we worried you,” Carrie said.
“Oh, that’s okay. I’m just happy that you all are well.” By the way, where did you go?” Dukee asked.
“We flew a couple of hours north of here and found a nice tree to rest in. We felt a little wind but not too much. I see that everything here looks pretty good,” Carrie fluffed her feathers.
“Oh, yeah, my Auntie cleaned up the yard. Because it got pretty windy and wet here,” Dukee scratched his neck.
“Well, it’s good to see that you are doing well, and it’s good to be back home,” Carrie said.
Just then, Harold flew up and over to the screen. He fluttered near Carrie for a few seconds, said hello to Dukee, and then landed on the grass. Dukee and Carrie looked at each other. They were both surprised that Harold flew over and said hello.
“Well Dukee, I believe I left Harold waiting long enough. It was good to see you again and I will tell you about our trip the next time,” Carrie said.
“Okay Carrie, It’s good to see you again too,” Dukee lifted his front paw to wave.
Carrie flew down to the grass by Harold, and then they both flew up and over the house.
Mia was at the window in the front living room when she saw two cardinals fly by. I think that was Carrie and Harold, Mia thought. She watched as the two cardinals flew down the street and then out of sight. If that was them It’s good to see that they are alright, she thought.
“I wonder if Dukee saw them?” Mia hopped down off the litter box cabinet and trotted through the kitchen.
Mia trotted toward the sliding glass door and saw Dukee waiting to come in, “did you see Carrie and Harold?” Mia asked him through the glass.
Dukee nodded his head yes to Mia and then looked past her. Mia looked back and then scurried under the wingback chair when she saw Auntie walking toward her. Auntie let Dukee back into the house and then went back to her room.
“So I did see Carrie and Harold?” Mia looked at Dukee.
“Yep, and they are doing well. Carrie told me that they flew north before the storm hit. She said she’ll tell us more about it next time,” Dukee walked over to the cardboard barn.
“Oh, that’s good,” Mia hopped up onto the sofa.
“Harold also flew over before they left and said hello to me,” Dukee looked up at Mia.
“Really? Wow. I guess he might finally be warming up to us,” Mia sat down at the end of the sofa.
“Yes, that could be,” Dukee laid down on the paper on the floor.
