Mia was laying in her cube part of the kitty tower in the front living room grooming herself. Dukee hopped down from the stool by the window in his bedroom and walked out into the family room. He looked around and didn’t hear anything. He walked down the hall to the front living room and jumped up on the side table. Mia saw him as he jumped up and stopped grooming herself.
“Hi,” Mia said.
“Hi. I think that we did it,” Dukee walked to the end of the table and sat down.
“Did what?” Mia asked.
“I think everyone who follows our story wants Auntie to keep writing it but include more characters,” Dukee looked at Mia.
“Really? That’s great… Did Auntie tell you that?” Mia asked.
“Not exactly but she was talking to me about who the new characters could be,” Dukee looked out the window.
“Who are they?” Mia asked.
“I can’t say… You have to wait until she writes them in,” Dukee said.
“Oh… Okay,” Mia turned and looked out the window.
As the two of them looked out the window, a male and a female cardinal bird landed in the tree in the front yard. They sat on two different branches and sang a song to each other. Chirp chirp tweet chirp.
“Oh look, maybe they will be the new characters,” Mia said.
“Maybe,” Dukee watched them.
Just then the male cardinal flew off and the female looked like she was dancing a two-step while singing. When she finished she turned around and looked at Dukee and Mia. She spread one wing out and took what looked like a bow, then flew away.
“Did you see that? It was almost like she saw us,” Mia sat up.
“Yep, it sure looked like that,” Dukee looked at Mia.
They continued to watch out the window when they saw an all-grey cat creeping along the edge of the woods across the road. It would stop and look around, then creep along further. It was like it was making sure nobody could see him.
“Hey, look at him over there,” Mia said.
“Yeah, I think that I’ve seen him before,” Dukee watched as the cat ducked back into the woods.
Mia laid back down in her cube and started to lick the fur on her left side. Dukee backed up and then laid down on the end of the table. He watched out the window waiting to see who would come along.
“So do you think that cat is going to be a character?” Mia licked the long fur on her tummy.
“I don’t know, maybe,” Dukee licked the top of his paw.
Just then, a brownish-colored lizard with a black stripe crept up from the flowerbed and onto the screen on the window.
“Hey, look,” Dukee said.
Mia stopped licking and looked up. She slowly backed out of the cube and crept carefully toward the window. Just as she was going to pounce at the window, she heard the lizard say something.
“Did you hear that?” Mia looked at Dukee.
“Yeah, I think he said hello,” Dukee hopped down onto the blanket on top of the litter box cabinet. Mia and Dukee slowly stepped up to the window.
“Hello, my name is Larry. I’m new to the neighborhood and I saw you both lying there. I thought that I would introduce myself.”
Mia and Dukee looked at each other and looked back at Larry. Could this be real? Can they understand what this lizard is saying?
“Tell me, what are your names?” Larry asked.
“My name is Mia,” she sniffed the window.
“Yeah, and I’m Dukee,” he looked at Larry.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you both. I’m still looking around for the perfect home but I will certainly visit you often if you don’t mind?” Larry said.
“Yes, sure,” Mia said.
“I must be going now, I wish you a good day and I will see you soon,” Larry turned around and crawled back down to the flowerbed.
Dukee and Mia stepped right up to the window and watched as Larry crept out the flowerbed and scurried across the front yard.
“Did that just happen?” Mia looked at Dukee and backed up.
“Yes, yes it did,” Dukee backed up and sat down on the blanket. “I guess we met our first new character.”
“Yes, I guess we did,” Mia crawled back into her cube.
