The next morning Mia was sitting on top of her kitty tower looking out the front window. She watched as something different waddled across the driveway and into the front yard.
“What is that? She leaned a little closer to the window.
Just then, Dukee walked into the front living room and jumped up onto the side table. He walk to the end and saw what Mia was watching.
“Hey, there’s a duck,” Dukee sat down.
“A what?” Mia asked.
“It’s a duck… They like water. Where I used to live, I saw them a lot. They would walk right up to the screen door especially when Auntie got home and walked in,” Dukee said.
“I've never seen a duck before,” Mia watched it as it wiggled its tail.
“I heard Auntie say that you aren’t supposed to feed bread to ducks like so many people do,” Dukee said.
“How come?” Mia asked.
“She said that when ducks eat bread it fills them up and they don’t look for the food that is supposed to be better for them. And when they don’t eat the food that’s better for them they can get sick easier,” Dukee watched as the duck walked into the neighbor’s yard.
“Oh, that makes sense… I wouldn’t want to eat bread all the time either,” Mia looked at Dukee.
“She also said that any bread left around can draw predators or disease. And that’s not good either,” Dukee looked at Mia.
“Auntie is pretty smart huh?” Mia said.
“Yeah, she learns a lot of stuff,” Dukee said.
“I wonder where that duck came from?” Mia said.
“Well, they like water so it depends on where the water is,” Dukee licked his foot.
“I heard Mom say that there is water behind us,” Mia said.
Dukee looked toward the back of the house, “I haven’t seen any water back there.”
“I don’t know, that’s what I heard her say,” Mia said.
Dukee jumped down and walked toward the sliding glass door. Mia jumped down and followed him.
“What are you doing?” Mia hurried to catch up to him.
“I want to look out into the backyard,” Dukee said.
The two of them sat by the glass door and looked into the backyard.
“There are a lot of trees there, so maybe there is water on the other side,” Dukee looked.
“Yeah, probably… Mom said it’s there. We just can’t see it from here,” Mia scanned the back fence.
“Hmm, interesting… I’m surprised that that was the first time that you saw a duck then,” Dukee looked at Mia.
“Yep, first time,” She said.
The two of them sat there and looked out the sliding glass door. All of a sudden, a big black bird landed on the branch of the tall pine tree on the other side of the fence. It slowly tucked its wings down close to its body.
“Wow, that’s a big bird,” Mia said.
“Yeah, I see those out there sometimes when I’m out there,” Dukee said. “They’ve been in the front too, remember?” Dukee looked at Mia.
“Oh yeah, sometimes they dig in the garbage can,” Mia said.
“Yep,” Dukee looked around the backyard.
“Oh, I think I hear Mom getting up,” Mia said and walked to her bedroom.
Dukee sat there and looked at the bird in the tree. He saw a few smaller birds flying around in the back too. Just then he let out a loud meow and waited by the door. About a minute passed and Auntie walked out of her bedroom. She saw Dukee sitting by the sliding door, and walked over to let him out. Dukee trotted over to the stool and hopped up onto it. He sat there and inhaled the morning air.
