Dukee hopped down from the side table onto the blanket on top of the litter box cabinet. He sat there and lifted his one back foot to lick it. Mia watched him until she saw Carrie the cardinal fly down and land on the ledge outside of the window.
“Hey look, it’s Carrie,” Mia said.
Dukee put his leg down and sat up straight. Mia hopped down from the tunnel part of the kitty tower and walked over to the window sill.
“Hello my dear friends,” Carrie bowed.
“Hi Carrie,” Dukee and Mia said in unison.
“What have you two been up to lately?” Carrie asked.
“Not much really, I’ve just been hanging out on the back porch,” Dukee said.
“Yeah, and I’ve just been playing with a lot of my toys,” Mia said.
“That sounds delightful… Do you want to know what I saw the other day?” Carrie asked.
“Yeah, what did you see?” Mia sat down on the window sill.
“My husband and I were flying overhead about three miles away from here. We were enjoying ourselves when we saw a big mountain lion,” Carrie opened up her wings to show how big.
“A mountain lion?” Mia’s voice raised.
“You’re kidding right?” Dukee asked.
“No, I’m not kidding. It was early morning and we were near a wooded area when it walked out into the open,” Carrie said.
“Wow, I bet you were glad you were in the air,” Dukee said.
“Yes, I pretty much said that to my husband. Although, I don’t think that a mountain lion would eat a bird. But one never knows for sure,” Carrie fluffed her feathers.
“So, what did it do?” Mia asked.
“I don’t know, we just continued to fly to our destination. I imagine it was looking for something to eat,” Carrie looked at Mia.
“I would be scared to death if I ever came face to face with a mountain lion,” Mia said.
“Yeah, I think I would be too,” Dukee looked at Mia.
“So what are you doing today?” Mia asked Carrie.
“Oh, we are just taking it easy today. I told my husband though that I wanted to fly over here to see if you two were around and tell you what we saw,” Carrie said.
“Well thank you for stopping by and telling us. We don’t get to experience that stuff. Not that I’d want to run into a mountain lion or anything like that,” Dukee said.
“Yeah, me neither,” Mia looked at Carrie.
“Have you ever been chased by anything?” Dukee asked.
“Oh yes, we’ve been chased by dogs, cats, and bigger birds but it’s all part of living in the wild. Sometimes you end up in areas that you’re not quite welcome,” Carrie said.
“It sounds kind of scary out there,” Mia licked the top of her left paw.
“Well, it can be. You just have to learn where you are accepted and always keep an eye on your surroundings,” Carrie said.
Just then, Dukee heard Mom or Auntie walking toward them.
“Someone’s coming,” Dukee said.
“Okay you two, I will see you again soon,” Carrie took a bow and flew up into the air.
“Bye Carrie,” Mia said.
Dukee turned his head and Saw Mom walk into the living room. Mia turned, walked past Dukee, and hopped down onto the floor to greet Mom. Dukee laid down and just looked out the window. He envisioned a mountain lion standing in front of him for a moment. Nope, I wouldn’t want to see that, Dukee thought and shook his head.
