After Mia had her breakfast, she walked out into the family room. Dukee was sitting out there by his blue mouse and wiping his ear with his paw. Mia saw Dukee and trotted passed him without saying a word.
“Good morning,” Dukee looked as she trotted by.
Mia stopped briefly at the end of the hall, “morning,” Then continued on her way.
Mia trotted and jumped up onto the table where her other food and water is. Mia started to drink some water when she heard Dukee walk down the hall and into the front living room. He Jump up onto the side table and walked to the end. Mia finished drinking her water and turned around.
“Sorry about that, but I just ate my breakfast and I needed a drink,” Mia walked over to the window sill.
“Oh, okay. I didn’t think that I did anything wrong,” Dukee looked at her.
“No, the gravy left a tickle in my throat this time so I needed a drink,” Mia licked all around her mouth.
“Yeah, I can understand that. It happens to me sometimes too,” Dukee said.
Just then, Carrie, the cardinal flew down from the tree and landed perfectly on the ledge outside of the window.
“Good morning you two,” Carrie tucked her wings.
“Good morning Carrie,” Mia looked.
“Good morning Carrie, you look pretty today. How are you?” Dukee hopped down onto the blanket to get closer to the window.
“Oh, thank you. I’m doing very well. My children have left the nest and are learning how to find their own food now,” Carrie said.
“You have more children?” Mia asked.
“Yeah, I didn’t know that you had more children,” Dukee cocked his head.
“Oh, I guess I forgot to tell you that Harold and I had two babies this past spring. That’s why I haven’t been around as often,” Carrie said.
“Well, congratulations,” Mia said.
“Thank you. It’s been a few years since we had our last two children so we felt it was time to have more,” Carrie ruffled her feathers.
“So you have four children now?” Dukee asked.
“No, we have seven total now,” Carrie looked at Dukee.
“Wow, seven? That’s a lot of children. I don’t think that I would ever want seven children,” Mia looked at Carrie.
“Well, as a bird that’s what we do to keep our species alive,” Carrie looked at Mia.
“I never thought of it that way. That would be sad to not see pretty birds like you anymore,” Mia said.
“Yes, a world without pretty birds and flowers would be a world with less color,” Dukee said.
Mia looked at Dukee and giggled, “where did you hear that?”
“I just made it up,” Dukee readjusted his feet.
“I like it,” Carrie said.
“Thank you, Carrie,” Dukee stuck his tongue out at Mia.
“You both bring color to this world as well and should be proud of it. Just look at you Dukee, you make me think of fall colors like the orange leaves that fall from some trees. And the pumpkins and carrots that humans grow and use for food. And Mia, your colors make me think of the earth,” Carrie said.
“You look at me and see dirt?” Mia asked.
“No, not just dirt. Think about it… Your black color can be the dirt that grows so many glorious trees and plants that our earth needs. And your coppery brown color makes me think of some streams and how the water sparkles in them,” Carrie said.
“Wow, we do bring color to this world,” Dukee Looked at himself and then Mia.
“Yeah, I guess we do. I don’t think that I would like a world without color in it,” Mia said.
“Me neither,” Dukee shook his head.
“So what have you two been up to lately?” Carrie asked.
“Well, I was sick for a day and a half but I’m good now,” Dukee said.
“You were sick? What was wrong?” Carrie asked.
“I think I ate something that I shouldn’t have so I got sick. But Auntie was right there watching over me,” Dukee said.
“Yeah, and a while ago my Mom was gone for a couple of days. But Auntie made sure that I had everything that I needed. I’m just happy that Mom came back though because we have so much fun together. Even though I get grumpy at her sometimes,” Mia licked the fur on her shoulder.
“Well, you two seem to have happy lives here which is good. Not all animals have it that good… But anyway, I must be going now. I told Harold that I wouldn’t be gone long,” Carrie said.
“Okay, Carrie. Thank you for stopping by,” Dukee lifted his paw to wave.
“Bye Carrie, take good care of your children,” Mia said.
“You two take care too and I’ll see you again,” Carrie turned around and flew up and around the tree.
“I like her, she’s so intelligent,” Dukee looked at Mia.
“Yes, I do too. I’m learning a lot from our new friends,” Mia turned and crawled into the cube part of the kitty tower.
Dukee laid down on the blanket and gazed out the window. Mia licked her front paws and then wiped her ears. Mia and Dukee learned that we all are different and special in our own ways. And that our differences are what makes the world a good and colorful place.

Ours are colorful too and all have their own little quirks. They share a few quirks too. Callie is a tortoiseshell calico who loves chewing on plastic. She eats everybody's food and allows me to pick her up long enough to put her up in the tower to get treats. Marie is a light grey American sing-a-ling tabby also known as American ring tail tabby. She has never purred. She trills and never allows anyone to pick her up. It takes me 3-4 hours to catch her to take her to the vet. She loves climbng up high. Sophie is a long hair siamese. She loves chewing on plastic also. Does not like getting picked up either. She and Callie will take turns sleeping on my lap. None of them will eat pate style wet canned food. Marie ests Fancy Feast tender center cat food and gravy lovers and grilled wet food but only likes the gravy. The other two only eat the grilled and gravy lovers style wet food and eat the Purina hairball dry food. All are goofy things but we love them. Before I post this I want to let you know in case you haven't heard, Aunt Gertie has been in the hospital and has been moved to a rehab facility. She is recovering from Covid. Uncle Herb, Brenda and Mark are recovering at home. Aunt Gertie will probably be in rehsb until about August 14th. I know you know what they are enduring. Hope you all are well.
