Dukee was sitting on the side table in the front living room, and looking out the window. Mia trotted into the room meowing with her Lamb-chop toy in her mouth. Dukee looked back at Mia as she set Lamb-chop down on the floor.
“They won’t be back until late,” Dukee said.
Mia walked around the leather sofa and looked up at Dukee, “why do you say that?”
“Because that’s what Auntie said. She said they were going to the west coast to see the baby,” Dukee watched Mia.
Mia jumped up onto the kitty tower and looked out the window. She looked down the road and saw about eight white Ibis walking along the ditch.
“Are you sure that they didn’t just go to the store?” Mia looked at Dukee.
“Yes, I’m sure. Didn’t your Mom say anything to you about it?” Dukee asked.
“Well, she did say that she would see me later and to be a good girl. But she says that when they go shopping too,” Mia said.
“Don’t you remember when Auntie and your Mom were talking about finding the best way to drive over there?” Dukee said.
“Oh, because of the flooding, right?” Mia asked.
“Yes, from the past storm,” Dukee looked back out the window.
“Okay, I remember now. Mom is a grandma now,” Mia licked her front paw.
“Yep, there is a new member to the family,” Dukee said.
Mia and Dukee sat there watching the birds peck at the ground. Out of all the white birds, there was one with a lot of brown on it.
“Why does that one bird have a different color from the others?” Mia asked.
Dukee looked at the Ibis, “I think that one is younger than the others.”
“Oh, yeah, maybe. So that means they all could still be from the same family,” Mia watched them as they left the front yard.
“Of course, they could. We all start out looking different, but are still part of a family,” Dukee said.
“That’s good that no matter what you look like, a family will love you,” Mia said.
Mia walked off of the kitty tower, onto the table, and over to her food dish. She crunched on a few kernels and thought about when she came into the family. She vaguely remembers two nice ladies who rescued her from some big machine. She was taken inside and given food and water. They cleaned her up, gave her toys, and made her feel loved. Hmm, I think that they come over here sometimes, Mia thought.
Dukee hopped down onto the blanket on top of Mia’s litter box cabinet and laid down. He licked the fur on his side and then down his left arm. Dukee felt comfortable watching over the house and keeping an eye on Mia while Auntie and Mom were away for the day. After all, he is older and more experienced than Mia. When Mia was done munching, she stepped onto the kitty tower and jumped all the way up to the top. She licked her paw and washed her face a few times before she lay down. For now, it was quiet, but who knows when later comes around.
