While Mia and Dukee were sitting on the bench at the window, a bird swooped down. The bird saw Mia and Dukee sitting there and hopped toward the flower bed. It cocked its head from side to side and hopped closer.
“Do you see that?” Mia asked.
“Yeah, I think that bird sees us,” Dukee sat still.
The bird flew up a little and landed on the globe that sat in the flower bed. Mia couldn’t believe her eyes, that this bird was coming so close. The little black and white bird sat there and cocked its head. It watched Mia and Dukee as they sat there very still.
“I have this urge to jump at it,” Mia said.
“Well, if you do it will probably fly away,” Dukee stared at the bird.
Mia slowly stepped closer to the window and the bird just watched her. It chirped a couple of times but still sat there on the globe.
‘
you go any closer and I bet it flies away,” Dukee said.
But it didn’t. Mia got all the way to the marble window sill, and it still sat there. It chirped a couple more times and cocked its head.
“I think it wants to be friends,” Mia said.
“Yeah, maybe,” Dukee adjusted his back feet.
The two of them continued to watch the bird watch them. All of a sudden the bird flew at the lower section of the screen on the window and hit it. This made Mia lean back away from the window. The bird landed back on the globe and ate something. While Mia and Dukee were focused on the bird, they didn’t notice the inchworm crawling on the screen.
“Whoa, that scared me,” Mia stepped back onto the bench seat.
“Yeah, the startled me too,” Dukee said.
The bird sat there and looked around. It chirped a couple more times, cocked its head, and flew off. It’s hard to say if the bird actually noticed Mia and Dukee, or if it was focused on the inchworm the whole time.
“I did not expect that at all,” Dukee stood up, turned, and hopped down.
“Yeah, me neither,” Mia hopped down after Dukee.
“I’m getting kind of hungry though,” Dukee walked through the kitchen and into the hall.
Mia watched him as he walked to his bedroom, then she trotted over to her food dish in the front living room.
