It was around 7:15 am and Dukee meowed and jumped up onto the desk in his bedroom. He sat on the desk and watched to see if Auntie would get up and feed him his breakfast. Auntie didn’t move so Dukee meowed again. He watched as Auntie then rolled over and opened her eyes.
“It’s a little early don’t you think?” Auntie looked at Dukee.
Dukee sat still and stared at Auntie. He knows that eventually she will give in and get up. After all, there is daylight outside. Dukee patiently waited, but adjusted his tail and knocked a pill bottle over. Oops sorry, he thought. Auntie opened her eyes again and saw Dukee sitting there staring at her. She pulled the sheet off and said good morning to Dukee. As she got up, Dukee stood up and was excited about getting his breakfast. Auntie gave him a few pets and then picked up his breakfast bowl.
She opened the canister and took out some dehydrated chicken. She crumbled it up into the bowl small enough so that he wouldn’t choke on it. While Dukee ate his breakfast, Auntie got dressed. After Dukee finishes his chicken, he usually likes to go out onto the back screened porch to see if anything is happening outside. Dukee ran ahead and met Auntie at the sliding glass door. When she slid open the door, Dukee ran over to the far corner of the screen. Larry is that you, he thought.
Dukee reached up at the screen and the lizard scurried around to the other side of the downspout.
“Nope, I guess not,” Dukee sighed.
Dukee watched as one of the squirrels that live close by, walked along the top of the fence. It made its way to another pine tree and scurried up it. It was a sunny but cool morning this morning and Dukee wanted to enjoy it. He hopped up into one of the chairs out on the porch and laid down. This is the good life, he thought.
In the house, Mia just ran from her bedroom, through the family room, and down the hall. She jumped and hopped, and then walked over and scratched on her mom’s recliner. When she was done, she trotted over to the kitty tower and jumped up onto it. She looked out the front window and saw the white Ibis birds walking along the ditch in the front yard. As they pecked at the ground while walking, Mia watched them. Those are some really long beaks that they have, Mia thought.
After the Ibis walked down the street and out of sight, Mia hopped down and ran out of the living room, down the hall, and stopped. She heard something coming from Auntie and Dukee’s room. She stepped into the small hall and peeked around the corner. Mia saw Auntie working on her laptop. Oh, she must have the TV on, she thought. Just before Mia turned around, she heard Auntie say good morning to her. Mia glanced at Auntie and then trotted into the family room.
Mia continued in through her bedroom doorway and jumped up onto the bed. Mom was sitting up now watching TV. Mia stepped onto her fish-shaped scratch pad and did some scratching before she laid down on it. Facing their bedroom window, Mia watched how a couple of birds swooped down and landed on the grass. She saw another bird fly up and then back down. She watched as it landed on the fence in the backyard. Mia looked at Mom and saw Mom smiling at her. Mia then looked back out the window. This is the good life, she thought.
