Rebecca is a junior in high school and decided to take a babysitting job on Halloween night this year. She was eager to save some money for a dress that she wants for the senior prom next year. Her mother told her about the new family that moved to the area and that they were looking for a babysitter. The only thing is, is that they moved into the old Macy mansion out on County Line Road. The kids in school have said that the place is haunted and they won’t go back to it. Rebecca didn’t care though because she just wanted to make some money.
After Rebecca called and confirmed with Mrs. Reynold’s about being at their house at seven, she jumped for joy. She told her mom that they were going to pay her sixty dollars for the four hours that they plan to be gone.
“Wow, can you believe that? That’s almost half of what I need for that dress, mom,” Rebecca smiled and danced like she was at a ball.
On Halloween evening, as her mom drove her out to the Reynold’s place, Rebecca felt a little nervous about it. After all the scary stories that she heard about the mansion it worried her some.
“I don’t know about this mom, what if the old mansion is haunted?”
“Rebecca, they have two children that live there. Do you really think that they would live there if all of what your friends are saying is true?” her mother stated.
Rebecca thought about it for a moment, “you’re probably right mom. It’s only a big old house.”
“Besides, that’s a lot of money for four hours,” Rebecca’s mother looked at her.
Rebecca smiled as she pictured the dress in her head.
When her mother turned onto County Line Road and drove about a half a mile, there they saw it. The large freshly painted, lit up mansion, with ghosts and pumpkins scattered around the front yard.
“Looks like they enjoy Halloween too,” Rebecca’s mother pulled into the driveway.
Rebecca got out of the car and waved goodbye to her mom. She glanced around at the different decorations that were displayed while she walked the sidewalk and up the porch steps. When she rang the doorbell, it made a deep dong sound and then the door creaked as it slowly opened. Rebecca didn’t see anyone at the door so she peaked in.
“Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Reynold’s? It’s Rebecca.”
Just as she stepped inside the door, Jason and Jillian jumped out at her.
“Boo!”
Rebecca was startled but smiled when she saw the two children, “hi, I’m Rebecca.”
“We know,” Jason said and turned around.
“Come in, our parents are almost ready,” Jillian grabbed Rebecca’s hand.
Inside the mansion it was softly lit with various lamps and also decorated for Halloween. There were spiders of various sizes in webbing along the walls and spooky red glowing eyes on different paintings. Jillian pulled Rebecca into the living room where there was a recorded Disney movie playing on the television. Jillian plopped down on the sofa so Rebecca sat down next to her.
“What are you watching?” Rebecca asked.
“Escape to witch mountain, have you ever seen it?” Jillian asked.
“No I haven’t but it looks interesting.”
“Roar!” Jason popped up from behind the sofa wearing a hairy wolf mask.
Rebecca jumped and looked at him, “wow, that’s a scary mask you have on.”
“How do you know it’s a mask?” he asked.
“Jason stop it, we’re trying to watch the movie,” Jillian yelled.
Just then, Mr. and Mrs. Reynold’s came downstairs and walked into the living room wearing their own costumes.
“Rebecca, nice to finally meet you. You’re mother has told me so much about you,” Mrs. Reynold’s walked over to the sofa and held out her black glove covered hand.
“Hi, nice to meet you too,” Rebecca shook her hand.
Mr. Reynold’s walked into the room and reminded his wife that they had to get going. Mrs. Reynold’s smiled at Rebecca and told her to help herself to any of the food that she finds and that they should be home around eleven.
“Okay, don’t worry about a thing, I think we are going to have fun tonight,” Rebecca smiled at Jillian.
After the Reynold’s left, Jillian asked the children what they wanted to do. Jason blurted out trick or treat while Jillian said hide and seek.
“Sure we can play hide and seek.”
“No, I want to play trick or treat,” Jason stomped his feet.
“Jason, we can play trick or treat after hide and seek,” Jillian glared at her brother.
Rebecca looked at Jillian and was stunned by how forceful Jillian’s words were to her older brother.
“Okay, you have to find us,” Jason said to Rebecca.
Jillian jumped up off the sofa and looked at Rebecca, “you count to fifty and then try and find us.
Rebecca closed her eyes and started to count while Jason and Jillian ran to different areas of the house. When Rebecca reached fifty, she stood up and started to search. Other than the sound of the TV, it was eerily quiet at the moment. Rebecca walked into the foyer and looked around for some good hiding spots. When she didn’t find them there, she moved on to the other rooms. She checked the kitchen and also the laundry room but found no one.
Before Rebecca could head upstairs, she heard the sound of a jingling chain coming from the end of the hall. It was dark in the hall and she couldn’t find a light switch. So, Rebecca carefully walked to the end of the hall and found a door. The sound was coming from behind the door. Rebecca slowly turned the doorknob and quietly opened the door. She saw the soft glow of a light coming from a basement.
“Jillian? Jason? Are you two down there?
With no answer from the children, Rebecca decided to go down the stairs. She took one slow step at a time, heard the occasional jingle of a chain, but now a soft moan as well. She was hesitant but continued on. The stairs creaked as she stepped and the walls looked as though they were made of old stone and sand. As nice as the rest of the house looked, this didn’t seem to fit in.
When Rebecca got to the bottom of the stairs, she had to turn right. She now heard the whimpers of a female and smelled the burning of candles. Being concerned, Rebecca walked down a short hall and entered into a room. There she saw her mom crying, gagged, and chained to a wall.
“Mom!” Rebecca yelled.
“Trick or treat?” Jason jumped in front of Rebecca.
“What is going on in here?” Rebecca tried to push past Jason.
“Hold on babysitter,” Jillian walked in from another door.
“That’s my mom, let her go.”
“We will but you have to play our game first,” Jillian walked over to Rebecca’s mother with a knife.
“Please don’t hurt my mom,” Rebecca pleaded.
Jillian told Rebecca that she needs to eat the treats that they give her or her mother will get a trick. Rebecca agreed before she even knew what the treats were. Jason grabbed Rebecca’s arm and forced her into a chair. Jillian instructed Jason to tie her arms and legs to the chair. After that Jillian carried over a tray with various items on it.
“If you eat three of these things on this tray, we will let your mother go,” Jillian smirked.
“Yeah, and if you eat all six, then you can go too,” Jason laughed.
“Why are you doing this?”
Jillian set the tray down on a table near Rebecca and whispered to her, “because I can.”
Rebecca knew that there was no stopping them now, “okay, let’s get this over with.”
The first item that Jillian held in front of Rebecca was a long wood screw, “eat it.”
“A screw? I can’t eat that.”
“Eat it or your mother gets a trick,” Jillian pointed to Jason.
Carrying a large hammer, Jason walked over to her mother.
“Okay I’ll eat it,”
Rebecca opened her mouth and Jillian placed the long screw on her tongue. The sharp ridges of the screw worried Rebecca but she closed her mouth and tried to swallow it. Jillian smiled while she watched the expressions on Rebecca’s face. Rebecca then gathered enough saliva in her mouth and then as carefully as she could, swallowed the screw. She felt the ridges scratch as it went down her throat.
Jillian picked up the next item off the tray and held it in front of Rebecca. When Rebecca saw the wood dowel with small nails sticking out of it she shook her head no.
“I can’t eat that, it’s too dangerous.”
Jillian turned and looked at Jason. Jason swung the hammer and hit Rebecca’s mother in the shin. She screeched in pain and cried even harder.
“Mom… I’m so sorry,” Rebecca cried.
Jillian looked back at Rebecca and showed her the dowel. Rebecca slowly opened her mouth and Jillian set it inside. Rebecca tried to create more saliva but couldn’t. Her mother looked at her, grunted, and shook her head no. Rebecca tried to swallow the dowel but it got stuck. She started to choke and gasp while Jillian smirked.
Jason started to dance and repeat, “trick or treat, trick or treat.”
Rebecca’s mother cried while she watched her daughter struggle. Jillian then shoved a golf ball into Rebecca’s mouth in hope that she would gag and die. Jason ran over and hit her mother a few more times with the hammer.
An hour of torture had passed, and Rebecca and her mother eventually died. This seemingly normal looking family had killed again. Will they have to move so soon or will they get away with it? One really never knows the new families who move into a neighborhood. Do you have any neighbor’s that you wonder about?
I hope that you enjoyed this new Spook Season Story. Please feel free to let me know below.
I sure wasn't thinking of trick or treat in that manner. Everyone should beware of big old mansions and neighbors you don't know !
