After the police chief was finished at the auditorium, he headed down to the police station. Talking to the ex-boyfriend of the victim was at the top of his to-do-list. The chief also found out where Daniele, the possible best friend of the victim lived. He got a hold of her parents number and spoke to her mother. She said that Daniele hadn’t gotten home yet but expected her soon. The chief asked the mother how close Daniele was to Tabatha Baker, and that made her pause.
Unsure what this was about, the mother asked the chief. Of course, he couldn’t disclose any information yet but asked her to let Daniele know that he wants to speak with her. It won’t be long before the news of this tragedy hits the TV and the papers, but until then the chief needs to be careful about what he says.
It wasn’t long before Reggy the ex-boyfriend arrived at the police station. The chief invited him to walk down the hall and into a cool, bare-walled room with a two-way mirror. The chief informed him that he wasn’t under an arrest, yet, and that anything he had to say would be helpful. The chief started out with how long had he known the victim? Just a year Reggy told him. He told the chief that when they first met he asked her out. They dated for a few weeks and decided that they weren’t compatible. I wonder who decided that?
The chief asked Reggy who broke up with who? Can you guess who? Reggy told him that Tabatha broke it off because they really didn’t have anything in common. And, she also wanted to focus mostly on her dancing career. Was Reggy heartbroken over it? He didn’t seem to be. He said that he has a sweeter girlfriend now anyways. Sweeter huh? What kind of personality did Tabatha have? Wasn’t she sweet? The chief asked Reggy what he meant by that. Reggy told him that Tabatha could be really mean sometimes. Hmm, interesting.
The chief told Reggy that he could go now but not to leave town, just in case he has more questions to ask him. Reggy told the chief that he’s not going anywhere, but that he might want to talk to Mr. Darren. Oh really? What does he think he knows about Mr. Darren, the dance teacher? The chief stopped Reggy and asked him. Reggy told the chief that he heard the tail end of a somewhat heated discussion between Tabatha and Mr. Darren. That’s funny, Mr. Darren didn’t say anything about a heated discussion. What did you hear, the chief asked Reggy. Reggy told him that Mr. Darren angrily told Tabatha that she needs to practice longer if she wants the lead in Swan Lake.
Interesting… Was Mr. Darren just pushing the young lady to work harder or was there something else that Mr. Darren wanted from her? After Reggy left the station, the chief called Mr. Darren’s office but no one answered. Then he called the university and asked for someone who knew Mr. Darren really well. The secretary forwarded the call to a Mr. Goble, the science professor. Mr. Goble and Mr. Darren have been close friends for almost five years now. I wonder what they have in common? A dance teacher and a science professor?
When Mr. Goble answered, the police chief asked him if they could meet. Mr. Goble told him that they could but he doesn’t have anything bad to say about Mr. Darren. Now, why would Mr. Goble say something like that? Does he know something about Mr. Darren or does he just think that he’s smarter than the police?
Well, the chief met with Professor Goble as he was corrected by him, down at the university. Professor Goble asked him to come to room 213 because he is still working. It was one of those class rooms where the seats were high up and you had to walk down the stairs to get to the front of the class. The chief apologized for his interruption but told the professor that he just wanted to confirm an alibi for Mr. Darren. The professor looked at the chief and told him that Mr. Darren had stopped by his office earlier that day for about fifteen minutes. Do you remember the approximate time, the chief asked him. He said that it was just after he had lunch, around two.
The chief then asked the professor what they have in common that has kept them good friends for five years. It seems that they both enjoy a good game of golf. During their spare time they would try and get in a game of eighteen holes, once maybe twice a week. Neither the professor or Mr. Darren were married so the chief understood how easily the men could get away for a while. The chief asked Professor Goble what kind of relationships Mr. Darren has had? Is he good with women? Do you know if he is an abusive man?
Professor Goble became furious with that line of questioning and told the chief that as far as he knows, Mr. Darren is a normal good guy trying to do what is right to help his students succeed in their careers and nothing else. Not wanting to make any more waves, the chief stopped his questioning. He had gotten enough information for now from the professor. The chief thanked him for his time and proceeded up the stairs. At the top of the stairs the chief stopped and looked back down at the professor. He did seem easily agitated with some of those questions. Was he hiding something or was he just concerned about his friends life?
