While officer Dunken dug around in the flower beds, detective Williams scanned the lattice that surrounded the base of the front porch. He walked around and looked at what was under the porch. He saw nothing really except dirt and rock under there though. Williams did notice that the lattice was attached to some steel angle irons that were sticking up from the ground, so he looked at them carefully.
In the house, Mr. Page sat still in the chair but was now watching the detective’s every move. Officer Dunken would glance in the window every so often to make sure that Page hadn’t moved from his seat. Mr. Page did seem a little unnerved now that they were digging around in his front yard.
“I don’t think that Page likes us snooping around in the front yard,” Dunken said.
“Yeah, I’ve noticed that too.”
Williams walked off the sidewalk and toward the corner of the porch near the driveway. He reached through different sections of the lattice and felt for anything out of the ordinary. A couple of sections he felt a nail head sticking out but nothing else so far. When he got to the corner of the porch closest to the house he saw an angle iron that looked out of place. There’s a porch post to attach the lattice to, why would he need an angle iron there, Williams thought. When he reached through the lattice and felt the angle iron, he noticed something was hanging there. It felt like something made of tough leather.
