Shrimp was curious as to what farmer joe was doing in the shed behind the barn. So she and her brother Tiger quietly crept up to the doorway and peeked inside.
“I can’t see anything. Joe has those bails of hay in the way,” Tiger said.
“Wait here, I’ll sneak inside,” Shrimp said.
Farmer Joe was kneeling down by one of the bails when Shrimp crept up next to him.
Joe looked down beside him, “well hello Shrimp, do you want to see Bonnie’s babies?” Joe asked.
Shrimp looked back at her brother Tiger as Joe picked her up to show her.
“See, there’s Bonnie, and there’s her babies,” Joe said as he put Shrimp down on top of the bail of hay.
Awe, aren’t they cute, Shrimp thought.
Tiger walked up to Joe and rubbed on his arm.
“Oh, you want to see too, Tiger?” Joe picked him up and showed him.
Bonnie looked up at Shrimp and Tiger on the bail of hay. She winked at them as they observed her babies cuddling around her. After a few minutes Joe got up and left the shed. Shrimp and Tiger stayed behind to watch Bonnie with her babies.
“Congratulations Bonnie, your babies are so cute,” Shrimp said.
“I’m happy for you Bonnie,” Tiger said.
“Thank you Shrimp, thank you Tiger. I’m getting used to being a mother now, but I was sure scared when they were smaller,” Bonnie said.
“How come?” Shrimp asked.
“Well, I have never been a mother before and I didn’t think that I knew what to do. And then instead of having just one baby, I had seven babies all at once. So, it is pretty scary at first,” Bonnie said.
“I guess I would be scared too if I had seven at one time,” Tiger said.
Shrimp and Bonnie both giggled at what Tiger said.
“What? What’s so funny?” Tiger asked.
“The only way that you could have any babies is if your mate had them silly,” Shrimp said.
“What do you mean my mate?” Tiger asked.
“You’re a boy, Tiger. Boys can’t have babies,” Bonnie giggled.
Tiger looked at Shrimp as she nodded her head up and down, “oh, so only girls can have babies?”
“Yes big brother, only girls,” Shrimp said.
“Oh, okay. Well, that might be a good thing for me then,” Tiger said.
“Why is that?” Shrimp asked.
“Well, I won’t have to worry about feeding all them then,” Tiger said as he jumped down off of the bail of hay.
Tiger trotted out of the shed and headed toward the barn. Shrimp sat and watched as Bonnie’s babies nuzzled close to their momma. Shrimp felt such joy as she watched her friend with her new babies.
“Well Bonnie, I will let you get some rest if that’s possible,” Shrimp said.
“Okay, thank you Shrimp. And one of these days as they get bigger, if your careful, you can come in here and play with them,” Bonnie said.
“Oh, that would be wonderful. Talk to you soon Bonnie,” Shrimp said as she jumped down off the hay bail.
Shrimp trotted out of the shed and around to the front of the barn, “a new family on the farm… What a wonderful day it is.”
