Once Jonathan's head hit the pillow he fell fast asleep. The house was quiet, and only the sound of crickets was outside. Around two o’clock in the morning, Jonathan was startled awake by a disturbing dream. He sat up quickly and adjusted his eyes and his thinking.
“Oh, it was only a dream,” he looked around.
He laid back down and rolled over to his left side. He could see in his mind the young woman from his dream. She had long blonde hair, she was wearing a red dress, and was screaming. He saw flames all around her. Jonathan was able to fall back to sleep and didn’t wake up until six am. He tossed the sheet off and got up. He put on the same clothes he had on yesterday since he was going to finish painting.
Jonathan went into the bathroom to comb his hair and brush his teeth. Down the carpeted steps he trotted and went into the kitchen. He turned on the overhead light and grabbed the coffee pot. Jonathan rinsed the pot out and filled it with water. He poured the water into the coffee maker and finished setting it up. As he gazed out the window by the sink, he thought of that dream.
He didn’t recognize the woman so he hoped that it was just someone his brain created. Out of the cabinet, he took a clean coffee cup and set it by the coffee maker. I wonder if I should subscribe to a newspaper, he thought. When Heather was alive, she enjoyed reading the paper in the morning. Mostly the art and entertainment section. Jonathan walked over to the refrigerator and opened up the freezer part. He pulled out the hamburger patties that he bought and moved them to the refrigerator.
“I think that I’ll grill up some burgers tonight.”
